Title: Marriage record help
Post by: sarahmcmast3r on Wednesday 27 August 14 23:09 BST (UK)
Hi, I was wondering if it's possible to find a record for the marriage of a Mary Jane Siberry to a McDermott.
He was Roman Catholic , and she wasn't. She was ostracised from her family and moved to America around the 1900s.
I've been trying to find a record for her marriage but I've been unable to find anything, she was born in 1879 (I'm not sure where abouts in Ireland she was born but her family lived in Sligo, Co Roscommon and Liethrm for sometime.

Thanks for any help that can be given.

Hello -

This does not answer your query, but there is a Mary Jane Siberry buried in the Old Section of Sligo Cemetery. She was the daughter of Thomas Siberry and died on 27th September, 1900, aged 14.

Is this the girl that you thought might be pregnant going to America?
I seem to remember looking for her before.

Yeah the same girl, my great uncle now thinks she left for America not because she was pregnant but because she married a Roman Catholic.

There is this Mary Jane in Leitrim but I can't find a matching McDermott
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYZ7-5Y9

And this but it's Londonderry and the name is a bit off
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYH6-2NY
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYHX-B28
Of course just because they are on the same page doesn't mean they married each other.

It looks like that John McDermott married Margaret & Mary Saberry married John Sweeney.

How do you work that out, is it possible on FamilySearch or do you need a sub somewhere, or is it because it's Londonderry so on one of the Northern Ireland sites? I always struggle with this matching business.

It's a combination of database searches. In this case I started with free search on www.emeraldancestors.com (covers N.I. only)- marriage for 'Mary Saberry' gave year, registration district & groom's 1st name (John). The searched for 'John McDermott' which gave wife's 1st name as Margaret.
Then to www.familysearch.org. Looked up Mary Saberry's marriage to get quarter, volume & page number (already had year & registration district) and then searched for 'John@ with matching details. Two results- John McDermott & John Sweeney- and already found that John McDermott married a Margaret not a Mary.

Regarding the new U.S. thread- it's New Haven (2 words not one) which is both the name of the city and its county.

Forgot to add another hint- if you have a possible name for the husband/wife then see if you find them in 1911 census (number of years married might not be exact but can be close to the actual marriage).
