Please can anyone find any information on Clarence George Chittleburgh Born 1897 Wangford Suffolk. On his WW1 medal record he has changed his surname to May, the record was changed in 1921. On his marriage bans july 1918 he crossed the surname chittleburgh for May.
his marriage cert gives his Father as Ernest may.
In 1972 he was called George May & he won the Macdougall award it was to do with poultry.
Thank You.

his marriage cert gives his Father as Ernest may.
What was Ernest May's occupation on Clarence's marriage cert?

Not sure the 1892 marriage of Charles Chittleburgh ito Eliza related to Clarence - Charles (who is William and Annie's son, b G Yarmouth 1862) is alive and well and living with wife Eliza in 1911.
I wonder if Clarence's mother is Charles' younger sister Elizabeth (b c1877) and she then marries Ernest May after Clarence is born

After 1875 (I think!) a putative father named on a birth certificate had to be present at the birth registration, and give his permission.

Mabel, I think you're right, I didn't check for Charles & Eliza in later census ::) (that's what happens when you try to do genealogy and cook at the same time ;D )

I think on the 1901 census the George Chittleburgh with his grandparents actually lives at Staithe Road, Bungay, in the registration district of Wangford.
At the records office I checked the transcripts of Bungay Holy Trinity and Bungay St Mary for Chittleburgh entries but they were few and far between:
Bungay St Mary
September 24th 1861 by banns
William Chittleburgh full age bachelor (occ: groom) of Hornsey Middlesex (signed)
Annie Baxter full age spinster OTP (X)
Fathers: Isaac Chittleburgh labourer, Thomas Baxter stonemason
Witnesses: Henry Cullingford, Mary Smith
Bungay Holy Trinity
Henry Clifford s/o William and Anna Chittleburgh bap 29th August 1868
These were the only Chittleburgh entries I could see in that time frame (no other baptisms 1860 to 1900 that I could see) :(
