can anyone locate a missing family on 1861 - I think they'll be in Essex, given their youngest was born there in 1860. I have other censuses, just need 1861.
This is the list
Henry Strains b c1820 Woolwich. Occupation watchmaker
Mary Strains (nee Klimcke) b c1829 Clerkenwell
Louisa Mary Strains b 1848 Clerkenwell
Alfred Charles Strains b c1850 Clerkenwell
Frances Nightingale Strains b c1855 Clerkenwell
Emily Rosanna Strains b c1857 Clerkenwell
Edward Stephen George Strains b c1860 Plaistow
1871 reference is RG10, 287, 60, 52 (but Ancestry has them as Strams!)

I have searched variants for this family, goodness knows where they are as I can't find them, did they have anymore children after Edward 1860 ish
Louisa Maud

Hello,
I see they are in Islington in 1871. The sub- district being Islington East.
I think this district is missing in 1861.
Regards
Heywood

Didn't find a baptism for Edward in plaistow. Looked from 1855 to 1864.

Baptisms
Frances Nightingale 18/3/1855
Emily Rosanna 03/05/1857
Louisa Mary 03/05/1857
All at Charterhouse St Thomas Islington
Father Henry
Mother Mary Rebecca Waller Strains
If these were baptised then I assume Edward was, or perhaps he did get missed out
Louisa Maud

And Alfred ... Weird to miss the boys out?
Perhaps not plaistow but near?
-
Almost exactly 10 years on and i still haven't found them on 1861. I also can;t find birth registrations for any of the children apart from Louisa. Mother's maiden name is Klimcke - not recorded on Louisa's GRO register entry - which is very easily and often mistranscribed.
I'd be interested to see if anyone can find any trace of them between 1851 and 1871, apart from the baptisms below and Louisa's marriage in 1869. Were there more children, for example?
-
Is there any other surname the family could have been known by?. I have found some older siblings of Henry baptised in Woolwich to John Strains and Elizabeth (starting with Edward James 1813). Do you know what Elizabeth's maiden name was?

Thanks - definitely them. I haven't really explored Henry's parents and aren't aware of another name. They seem to stick with Strains, or closely phonetic versions of that

MMN Fearn, birth registered in Medway. I've found her baptism - parents John and Ann. From 1861 he's b Dover in 1827, so not Henry's brother
-
Hi
But isn't Medway Ann Maria's birth registered Dec qtr 1854
Baptized at Rochester 14 January 1855
Looks like she is with her father John in St Margaret Rochester in 1861

Ann M died May 1855 Clerkenwell must have been born around the end of 1852 / beginning of 1853, where you have a bit of a gap in the children of Henry and Mary.
She still may not be one of theirs of course, I don't know.

There's a baptism for Alfred
Alfred Charles Straines 10 Feb 1850 St. Mary Islington, born ? Jan 1850

Re Ann Maria
Burial at Victoria Park Cemetery (from a transcription/index)
11 May 1855, Hannah Maria Strains, Clerkenwell Cl., age 2 yrs 6 months
Well on the original it says Clerkenwell Close
The PO London 1856 Directory (commercial section) has
Strains Henry, secret springer, 45 Clerkenwell close
That's also the address/abode on the 1855 baptism of Frances Nightingale (louisa maud Reply #4)
Father Henry Strains a Secret Springer.

Thanks Jonw65 - one more to add to the family. And again there's no obvious sign of a birth registration - wonder why they bothered for Louisa and not the others
