Could anyone do a lookup?
Looking for Thomas Hughes birth or baptism date.
On all the census forms I have the date is 1841 in Clifden.
Thomas was Roman Catholic and he married and Ellen (?) in around 1864.
Ellen was born in Fairhill, Galway in 1839 ish
I have census forms for the family in Parr, Lancashire 1881 to 1911.
Thanks

Hi There
I'm afraid that you will need much more information first before trying to find his baptism.
1. Where were his children born ?
2. Have you gotten any of their birth certs to get their mother's maiden name ?
Only then can we look for a marriage for them !
THEN when we get his father's name and occupation from his marriage we can look to see if it's possible that his baptismal record still exists.

Hi,
No Unfortunately I do not have ANY of the children's birth certificates. I have sent off for several that look as though they could be right but none fit.
I will have to try a few more and come back once I have more information.
Thanks for the response

Hello,
I have looked for births and the family in 1871 but they are difficult aren't they!
Birth places show Westbury, Shropshire and Wednesbury, Staffordshire which somehow I prefer ::)
It is hard though as Hughes is such a common name.
Looking at http://www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk there are some possible births in Sandwell district and Wednesbury sub district
Thomas - 1864 and 1865
Patrick 1866
I can't see Mary or John though.
Are these the ones you have already tried?
Regards
Heywood

Hi Guys
Their birth places of Thomas & Ellen's children on the census are quite specific so I can only presume that they are correct.
Again though, until you get Ellen's maiden name we can't proceed in Ireland.
In saying that, it's great that the 1911 Census is specific as to the part of Ireland that they came from ie Clifden & Fairhill as once we get more info we an zone in on those areas in Galway to look for more leads.
I'm not sure if it's your tree or not, but there are one or two of this family on 'ancestry' but they both seem to be stuck at the same point as you.
One says that Thomas' parent's were called Martin & Bridget but given how little other info they have on their tree I would be very hesitant to take this as being fact.
I suggest that you work on Heywood's leads and fingers crossed one of them is correct.
Also, have you gotten the death certs for Thomas & Ellen ?
Do death certs from that period in England have parent's names on them ?

Hi Heywood and Tara,
Thanks or looking at the births for Wednesbury. I have the 1866 birth for Patrick in Wednesbury and whilst the mother is an Ellen Hughes (nee Hameday) the father is listed as Patrick Hughes.
Tara, yes I am one of the ancestry trees - yes I did put Martin and Bridget as parents in the hope of some information coming out of that - but nothing and I should remove it.
I will carry on looking and hopefully find something.
I must say having recently joined Rootschat I am very pleased I found it - everyone is so helpful and I hope I will be able to reciprocate for someone.

Hi Moggy
Well I can guarantee you that the cert is not a good lead as 'Hameday' is not a Fairhill surname, nor a Galway one.
I would certainly rule that cert out.
Keep trying though !
Good Luck

Oh that's a pity. From experience names can be wrong but I do appreciate that you can't keep buying Certs.
I just wonder where they are in 1871. I have searched and searched as I am sure you have also.

Hi Both,
Tara,
Yes, I will remove my 'long-shot' parents.
Heywood,
Yes I have searched - I even went through all the 1871 census districts for Wednesbury trying to match family names - no luck just very sore eyes!
Thanks again

Hey Moggy I do believe I've found a relative!
I've been researching my Paternal Irish side for 9yrs now (Tipperary & Kilkenny) but recently lost my Mam and last year I decided to look for her Hughes ancestors from Galway.
My Grandfather was John Hughes b1903 Pewfall Lancs, died in 1928 of his injuries after a pitfall.
My GGrandfather was Patrick Hughes b1866 Wednesbury, Staffordshire and GGGrandfather Thomas Hughes was born c1840 Clifden Galway married to Ellen ? Fairhill Galway.
Mam was only 3yrs old when her father died and my Grandmother remarried soon after so I have no Hughes cousins who Im in contact with, I am really happy to have found your post ;D
Look forward to hearing from you.
Warmest Regards Patzy (Patricia)

Hi Patzy,
I had almost given up hope on the subject of Thomas and Ellen!
Your grandfather was my grandmother's brother. I can find 7 children of Patrick and Catherine with John being the youngest and my grandmother, Ellen being the second eldest.
Thomas and Ellen are something of a mystery with no confirmed births/marriage or deaths. Although I do have slightly more on Patrick and Catherine, John's parents. I have their tree on ancestry which you would be more than welcome to look at if you are interested? I am not sure how to send a private email with details.
Hope to hear from you soon and to swap any information that we may have.
Cheers Jo

PS Patzy,
One of the possible maiden names for Ellen is Nolan and I noticed that you have Nolan's in your tree.
Maybe
