I have traced my ancestors to a William Brett or ( Britt) from England and his headstone says he was born in Christchurch, Hants, England in 1790 but this is where i run into the brick wall. I can find no record of his birth. In addition, i have been passed information that he came to Newfoundland as a youngster and a "cabin boy" on a trading ship. Any help would be appreciated.

I would get in touch with Maritime History Archive at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. They have records of sailors with Newfoundland connections, available on a CD rom.

I believe John Slade born Poole 1719 was the founder of the company but it was his nephew Robert Slade who was in charge during the timescale you are looking at. I believe MHA have the relevent company papers.
