Title: Marriage Ayr Parish
Post by: sossle on Wednesday 29 June 05 11:01 BST (UK)

I am looking for a marriage in Ayr parish in 1836.
Could it be in St Quivox Ayr?
William Skeffington married Margaret Storie. According to the birth certificate of one of their children born 1855 ( the only year that gives more info than others ) they married in 1836 in Ayr parish.
Any help would be appreciated
Many Thanks
  Sue

I have had a look through scotlands people and also LDS and found nothing for their marriage.

Also when searching for the birth of William Skeffington, with no year stated and searching whole of scotland only on match appeared and it was for 1858 so not yours.

Didn't find any matches on Scotlands people at all!

Are there any other variations of the name you can think of, i have treid a few for you without any success. or if you have them showing on any census, you will have year of birth and place of birth there.
I checked the 1871 census for william Skeffington and only one match apears, in Lanark which looks as though it is the other William i mentioned earlier who would be younger.
Bit of a mystery!
If you post anything additional you might have, which might help someone find them
Good Luck
Amanda

Hi Amanda,

I have William Skeffington on 1841 census in St Quivox with his wife Margaret & 3 children aged 25, on 1851 census still in St Quivox aged 34, 1861 aged 45, he then died in 1863 aged 45 yrs.
Margaret his wife was on 1871 census aged 56 in Calton Glasgow she then remarried became McCallum & was a widow once again by 1881 census aged 60 living in Dundonald Ayr. She died i8n 1890 aged 72yrs. On all census returns is states they were born in Ireland but I can't find out where in Ireland. There doesn't seem to be any record of either in Ireland.
The only possible marriage I have found is IGI  9th August 1835 St Quivox. Margaret Storey & William SCOFFILING?
Skeffington differs in spellings from Skiffington, Skivington & Stories from Storries, Storeys & Storys

I would say the marriage you did find is very likely.

Have you got Williams death cert?
That would hopefully give his parents names there.

 Hi Amanda,

Yes I do have his death certificate giving hia father as Louis Skeffington (a name which was carried on) & his Mother was  ? Craig. Am wondering whether she died aerly on as his family didn't know her first name.
Do you know if the marriages in the 1830's gave much information? Like parents names & where they were born?

Marriages pre 1845 don't usually have a lot of information. You need the old parish records for that.

The only thing i could find for Louis Skeffington was again in Lanark. A marriage to Margaret Jamieson.

This is probably the earlier mentioned William's family that i mentioned earlier.

Sorry, i can't think of anything else to help. Short of going to a LDS centre and checking through the parish records.
This may be an option if you have one local to you.
You can check on this link for your nearest.

Hope you find them!

Hi Sue,

I was just browsing and came across your posts.  I have recently started researching william skeffington and his family.  he is inmy family tree although i am not closely related.

i came across the marriage for 1835 which cpells his name as scoffiling and i would think it highly likely that this is the correct marriage

i am also thinking about going to the mitchell library soon to look at the OPRs and see what i can come up with

anyway if you want to reply to my post that would be great and maybe we could compare what info we have.

I thought I would mention another potential source.  If you can find a poorhouse record for Margaret or William, it may well tell you which part of Ireland they were from.

Hi,

I've tried to find poor law records. Unfortunately the ones I have don't say what part of Ireland they came from.
