Title: Norah Earl, nee Batchelor COMPLETED
Post by: robbo43 on Thursday 21 August 14 15:26 BST (UK)
Norah Batchelor was born on the 26th March 1889 in Betchworth, Surrey England. She married Charles Albert Earl in 1912 in Kensington, London, England. Charles died in 1946 but I had been unable to find any UK records of Norah after 1946, including any record of her death.

I have just discovered that she emigrated to New Zealand in 1956. She left Liverpool on the 7th January 1956 on the SS Tamora, belonging to Shaw Saville & Albion Co., with the port of destination given as Auckland. I assume that she was going to live with relatives in New Zealand although I was not aware of any family members there. I would be grateful for any information about Norah in New Zealand.

Robert.

The last-available-online electoral information for Norah, is in 1981.

The electorate name by then has changed to "East Coast Bays", but Norah and Mary Hilary are listed at the same address as previously given (1957) and both are shown as "retired".

... do you know how Mary Hilary EARL is related to Norah ?

Mary is most likely the firstborn daughter of Charles and Nora.

Charles and Nora migrated to New York in 1912.

Wow, I didn't expect so much so quickly. Thank you all very much for this.

Norah is my first cousin twice removed according to Ancestry, she was someone my grandfather & mother talked about at times and mother exchanged Christmas cards & odd letters but lost contact. The family also interest me as Norah's brother Jack was chief draughtsman for Bolton Paul Aircraft during the 2nd World War and I now live about 15 miles from the former factory & the house where Jack lived.

So we now have that Norah was born 28 April 1889, the New Zealand death records are right and the UK emigration records are wrong as Ellis Island records give her age as 22y 11mo when they arrive on 10th April 1912. Norah was a teacher before her marriage.

Charles & Norah married in 1912 and must have left for America within a couple of days of their marriage. Mary was born in 1913 and Catherine in 1915. Charles' draft registration card of 1917 shows them still in America and that they had had no more children at this date.

By 1920 they have returned to the UK as a son, William Henry F Earl, is born on 27 Mar 1920 in the Kingston on Thames area of Surrey. Electoral Registers show them living near Guilford, Surrey between 1926 and 1929. From 1931 onwards they are at 3 Molineux Road, Farncombe, near Godalming, Surrey and Mary Hilary Earl appears on the Register from 1935 onwards. The last Register before the start of the 2nd World War is in1938 and they are all still there. The only post-war Register easily available is in 1945, Charles & Norah are still at the same address but Mary isn't.

Charles dies in 1946. Mary emigrates to New Zealand on 13 Aug 1954, giving 3 Molineux Road as her address on the UK Outward Passenger List and arrives in Wellington on the 14th September, presumably to work as a teacher. Norah leaves England on the 7th January 1956 to join her daughter in New Zealand and arrives on the 18th February. They live at 113A  Kowhai Road, Mairangi Bay. Norah dies on the 5th April 1986 and is cremated at North Shore Memorial Park, Aukland, on the 8th.

Minniehaha, if it isn't too much trouble I would appreciate any information about newspaper death notices. Once again, thanks to all of you for such a tremendous effort

Robert

Hello Robert,

I have sent Norah's newspaper death notice to you by PM. Unfortunately it does not give Catherine's married name. If you contact the funeral directors they may provide this information.

I did a random search of the electoral rolls and perhaps since arrival in New Zealand, Norah and Mary Hilary resided at the same address in Mairangi Bay. The first entry I found was for 1957. In 1969, Mary H. was recorded as being a "clerk" and the same in 1975.

There was an electoral roll for 1986 which showed Mary Hilary still at the address in Mairangi Bay, but I was not able to find her on the 1987 roll.

I've just made a step forward with Catherine. I hadn't been able to find her at all in UK records but picked on two possible marriages, both of which are incorrectly recorded in BMD registers. One in 1933 turned out to be wrong but one Q4 1945 Surrey SW 2a 1382 showed a Catherine B Earl marrying either Henry H Jones or Henry H Smail. I then searched for Catherine Smail and hit the jackpot. Catherine Beatrice Smail (37) with her husband Henry Houliston Jones Smail (47) and their sons aged 6, 3 and 1 (names omitted as they may still be alive) appear on Passenger Lists leaving UK on the P&O Strathnaver leaving London on the 26 March 1953 bound for Sydney, Australia, their ultimate destination New Zealand. To confirm their identity their last address in the UK is given as 3 Molyneux Road, Farncombe, the same as Norah & Mary Hilary (Mollie). http://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=tna%2fbt27%2f1722%2f00%2f0038%2fp%2f0015f&parentid=tna%2fbt27%2f1722000038%2f00550.

This identifies three of the people in the death notice for Norah in the New Zealand Herald which Minniehaha kindly sent me, leaving two to find. At the moment it looks as if Catherine & Henry emigrated to New Zealand first and were followed by Mary, then Norah.

I think that Mary must have married John Curnow in New Zealand as she was still Mary Hilary Earl when she emigrated to New Zealand in 1954.
