I hope someone can help. I'm struggling to find records for the Ianson families from the Ripon area. There are plenty from Middleton Tyas and Aysgarth, Thirsk etc.
I have as follows:
Jane Elizabeth Ianson b.25 Sept 1845 Blossomgate, Ripon, (taken from birth cert) spouse Frederick Horsman, married Ripon Cathedral 1869. (marriage cert)
Father of Jane E. Miles Ianson, b. abt 1821 Azerley, Ripon, spouse Hannah Plews, married Ripon 17 Aug 1845 (taken from marriage cert).
Father of Miles: Christopher Ianson b about 1800 not known where, died 1844 Ripon.
I have Miles Ianson on only one census, the 1881 and he and Hannah are living in Skellgate Ripon, it was this census that I took his place of birth from. The only other census records are in Middleton Tyas. Azerly is a Hamlet within Ripon so surely he couldn't get mixed up about his place of birth?
I can't find a mother for Miles or a baptism record so any help to find the Ianson origins would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou,
Mandy.

1851 try looking for Miles Panson
1861 try looking for Miles Sanson
1871 try looking for Miles Janson

Thanks for that Carolanne. I've found them now, on the 1871 census they have a grandson Francis Horsman so I know for definate it's them. Now to try and find a bit more about Miles' parents, I seem to have hit a brick wall with them.

Hi
I have some I'Ansons in my tree, the family of William I'Anson born about 1809 in Bedale. He married Caroline Hutchinson 1835 at Masham and amongst several other children there was a Miles I'Anson b 1861 at Harmby.
Coincidence?

I have come across the Middleton Tyas I'ansons, including Christopher and Abigail. Mine don't have the apostrophe, it's just Ianson. It may be that Christopher and Abigail are Miles parents, his father was Christopher, but the censuses that have Miles on in Middleton Tyas also have Miles on in Ripon so I've ruled that out. I know the I'anson family started out in Hexham and the family will no doubt have spread around the area and will be linked somewhere along the line. I have the marriage cert for Miles and it doesn't have an apostrophe, neither do the other certs I have. The date of birth is 6 years difference for the Middleton Tyas Miles and mine, that doesn't mean to say it isn't him, but all the censuses state abt 1820/21, his marriage cert just says full age. His father was a farmer so I'll have a look at the Middleton Tyas family and see if that Christopher was a farmer or not. It's all very confusing ???

Doesn't look as if its going to get any easier the 1871 census for Miles Janson with the G/son named Francis Horsman gives his birth year as 1816 born Azerley Yorkshire. I can also see another 1871 census for a Miles Janson born 1818 Middleton Tyas both have a wife named Hannah.

Yes I know. i think I'll just have to be patient and hope there's a new record shows up sometime for Christopher. I know there were some Iansons in Ripon in the 1700's as they are on the parish registers for marriages so the family probably do originate from Ripon, I'm sure there will be a link to Middleton Tyas somewhere though along the line.
Thanks for your help, will let you know if i manage to get anywhere :)

oh my goodness, that's great info. It is what I was looking for certainly. I do have an electoral reg record for Christopher and I'm sure it was 74 Skellgate. Thankyou so much. I will get back to you if I need anything else, will have a look. I only had the father as Christopher and I couldn't find his spouse anywhere so that is a huge help, I can't thank you enough :)

Did Christopher come from Azerley aswell. I came across the marriage for him and Elizabeth but wasn't sure so it's nice to have it verified.

Hi again
1841 census has a Christopher Janson age 60 plus wife Elizabeth age 60 and son Francis age 20 living in Kirkby Malzeard (Azerley)
I wonder if the Frances dau bap 1818 was a son Francis ?
1851 has Elizabeth widow and son Francis again in K. Malzeard
The burial for Elizabeth Ianson in 1852 age 56 is perhaps not this Elizabeth.
Plenty for you to think about.
My family of Wells lived in this same area so I have had a lovely afternoon going over old territory !

Yes I'm sure Frances is male, I have him on the 1871 census living in Azerley, born Azerley abt 1818, married to Catherine with two children Elizabeth and John. I'll search for the 1841 census. I've been doing my family history for over 15 years and gave up on the Iansons as I wasn't getting anywhere, what started my interest again was a visit to Ripon library last week and the WWI exhibition there with a picture of a Captain I'anson killed in the war, obviously he's not related but it sparked my curiosity again. I looked round the old workhouse aswell as my great grandfather was born in there after his father deserted the family and ran away to Ireland with another woman. The link is my great grandfather was James Arthur Wass, mother Margaret Ellen Horsman daughter of Frederick Horsman who married Jane Elizabeth Ianson. So Miles was my x4 great grandfather (I think). I love this family history stuff, it's really interesting to see where we come from, I have a fair bit of Irish and Scottish in me too, which probably explains why I love Scotland so much and visit as often as possible, my mother lives in Scotland. Thankyou for all your help :)
