Title: Thomas Valentine Hewitt
Post by: farolito78 on Tuesday 19 August 14 13:55 BST (UK)
Hi

I am trying to find info on Thomas Valentine Hewitt. Born in Portsea in around 1853. I have a record of him in the workhouse aged 8. He later married Hannah and moved to Leicester.

I cannot find a birth or details of siblings or parents. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Neil

There is one born 1849, he is on 1861 census age 12 with parents Charles and Ann
RG 9. 634. 18.  32

On a vessel in 1871
In Durham as a coastguard, married to a Jane in 1881

So clearly a different one than yours

I believe he ended up in the workhouse. How can I find out, his reason for being sent there?

Contact the local record office and enquire what workhouse records survive, if any??

could be a sister.

I have also found a 1851 census for:

Robert 39, bricklayer
Elizabeth, 37 (wife)
Robert, 14
Frances, 12
James, 10
Jane, 6
Ellen 4
William, 2
Emma 1m
All b. Portsea

which could well be the family.

I think 1mth old Emma dies and Emma Imogene was possibly named after her.

And I found a baptism for a Robert Hewitt on 11 Apr 1812 at Portsea, son of Stephen and Elizabeth.  There's also a death of a Robert Hewitt in Portsea in 1856.

There are 2 births for Thomas Valentine and a death. Are you able to see if they connect to this family?

Two births, one 1849 that I followed through the censuses in reply #6, parents Charles and Ann
The other bn end of 1852, christening found in 1853, parents Robert and Elizabeth.

Ahh so not the same family. I wonder where the valentine part comes from then???? Very intriguing.

Thank you so much for this. You are a massive help.

Well, if the one b. 1849 is with his parents Charles and Ann on the 1861 census, and the one b. 1853 is in the workhouse in 1861, then they must be different people - just like lizdb said.

But the only way to be sure (if you're sure that the one in the workhouse is "yours), is to buy his birth certificate.  Are there any other Hewitts in the same workhouse who could be relatives?

As was said at the beginning - when "yours" marries Hannah, who does he name as his father?

It looks very much as if "yours" is the son of Edward sorry, Robert- we have ruled out the other one (son of CHarles) as he is with the family in 1861.

Looking at deaths -

Seems the one bn 1849 (not yours) died Sept 1925 in Exeter age 76

And the one bn 1853 died June 1921 in Leicester age 68 - which fits in with what you said about him moving to Leicester.

Thats Thomas dying in Leicester. It's Robert and Elizabeth dying in Portsea that I need. I have been told Elizabeth died 1853/4 but nothing for Robert

There are possible deaths for Elizabeth Hewitt in 1853, 1854, 1857, 1859. All Portsea Island Registration District. But as this is before age at death is shown in the index, we have no way of knowing from the index entries only, which one, if indeed any, of these is Roberts wife (Robert! Not Edward!)

I must admit I am confused now - you say you were told when Elizabeth had died . . . . but I cant see it on this thread before the ones I have just looked up on freebmd just now ............ Yet I thought you didnt know who his parents were before we found them on this thread!!!!
