Title: Roman Catholic marriage in Tyrone
Post by: noddie on Wednesday 29 June 05 03:20 BST (UK)
:)
Hi
I have recently read the Index for Marriage in Tyrone for 1932-1937 in th hope to find a Marriage for Annie KELLY to John James MOOREHEAD 11 Mar 1936, in Strabane.  The date was given to me by Annie before she died.
On reading the index, I found this at the end of the 1932 index.  Here they list
Army, Foreign, and R.Catholic marriages.
Under Roman Catholic
Annie KELLY, Mge Mar qtr 1936 in Cookstown.   It states that the marriage was celebrated in 1932 but not registered until 1936.  I went on to check the 1936 index and found the reference of Pg 619, Cookstown and Mar qtr 1936 for Annie. I cannot find any reference at all on any of the year to John except for a different quarter and a different place.  On finding the information for John I then could not find the same index # for Annie.
Confusing.
What should I do in regards to ordering a copy of the cert, write to N.Ireland or S.Ireland reference office.  Do you think this could be the right marriage, given the place of Cookstown was a far cry from Strabane.  If they did marry in 1932 Annie would have been 15.
Thanks for any help
Regards
Gwen

I'd  be  interested  in  seeing  these  records  where  do  you  find  them ?
I'd  also  be  interested  in  your  Kelly  as  I'm  trying  to  researk  Kelly's  from  that  area  and  having  no  luck.

Hi
I read the indexes here in Auckland, Pah Rd LDS centre.  I then ordered a film from LDS also, after I had my page and folio numbers for the area I was interested in.  Anyone can do this.  However you do need to have an idea of
the date you are looking for .  It can be quite labour intensive otherwise.
Where are you living, and what was the Kelly interest you had.

Gwen

The only connection I have is Annie.  I don't even know if this is true.
Anne lived in Donegal, Skelpy.  Her husband lived in Fearn also Donegal.
That is why I am trying to determine if this marriage is actually mine.
I find it strange they went there to marry.  Anne told me she married in
Strabane, Co.Tyrone.  Which is where I was born.
Sorry to be of no hlep

Hi Noddie
Back in those days there was no border between north and south and people travelled freely back and forth. Strabane is situated right on the border and there is very little travelling distance between Donegal and Strabane. You could try phoning the Registrars office in Strabane District Council. They will be able to tell you if the marriage was registered in Strabane. Number is 02871382204. Alternatively check out thier website. I dont have the web address but if you type in Strabane District Council you should find it.
Hope this is if some help. I had the same trouble with my rellies travelling back and forth between Donegal and Strabane.

Marriage certificate will list fathers' names but not the mothers' names. Ages on certificate (unless underage) will probably just say 'full age.' It will also list residence of bride and groom at the time of the marriage which might not be the place they were born or that their family was living.
