Title: 21/08/1918 William Thornhill age 18 Norfolk Regiment
Post by: suzard on Monday 18 August 14 21:44 BST (UK)
My Uncle William

Private William Thornhill was in the Sherwood Foresters -he came home on leave and was transferred to the Norfolk Regiment 1st Battalion and went to the Somme
Killed in action age18
Grave Adanac Military Cemetery Miraumont
William's neices and nephew have visited his grave.
William had siblings born after he was killed - our Grandmother always kept William's name alive and we nieces and nephew still do today - treasuring the pencil written letters he sent home from the front .
R.I.P. Uncle William x

Hello there I do believe we may have someone in common. William was cousin to my 2x great uncle Thomas Cooke who was killed 5 days after. Thomas' mother was Mary Jane Thornhill who was also half sister to Harry.

Can I ask if your uncle came from Nottingham and if so lived on Hartley Road?

You may have done it already but in case - the war diary for 1st Bn Norfolks for the period Apr 18 - Apr 19 is available for download at http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7352281.  While it is unlikely to mention him by name, it will at least give a flavour of his doings when he fell.

No he was not one of the Nottingham Thornhills - he was b Langley Mill on Notts/Derbys border but the family( until way back when they were in Yorks) came from Shipley Derbyshire
