Title: Identify Rank etc
Post by: candychris1954 on Sunday 17 August 14 17:17 BST (UK)
Can anyone identify the Rank of these two. 1st one I can only note 2 stripes on his forearm. Second one has 3 Chevrons pointing downwards on his upper arm, maybe 3 lots white piping on his collar and also some material medals on his chest. I cant figure out anymore.  Thanks x

the first guy has 2 gold stripes on his sleeve making him a lieutenant and between the gold stipes has a coloured stripe red (if I remember correctly) signifying dentist if its orange its surgeon.

the second guy is of the junior ranks and each of those stripes on his left arm signifies 4 years service for each stripe. if he had and anchor above the stripes would have meant he was a leading hand and with nothing above he would be an able rating.

the stripes on his collar is just the pattern on it. In the olden days the collar was meant to keep the tar off the uniform (they put tar on the ponytails !) sorry cant make out the medal ribbons

Do the 8 buttons on the double breasted jacket signify anything?

Thanks Ady - trouble is I dont know his name.  He could be a Soper or he could be an Endacott.....  I was going to see if I could find Dentists or Surgeons of that year.....  Any help finding out what his name is would be absolutely fantastic.  Im a bit of a novice though Im afraid... Its so frustrating when you have been left photos and no one has written on the back. x

Identifying medal ribbons in black and white photos is rarely easy.  In the lower picture I am fairly sure the ribbon on the right is for the Naval Long Service and Good Conduct medal (white borders with blue centre).  The ribbon to the left of it could be the Victory Medal, - if so, I would expect the British War Medal on the left (perhaps hiding under the lapel).

the 8 buttons on his jacket just means he is an officer -   6 buttons for chief petty officers and petty officers other ranks wore the better know sailor uniform
