Title: Clones, Co Monaghan / Co Fermanagh
Post by: RachaelB on Tuesday 12 August 14 17:08 BST (UK)
Looking for help with my great grandfather Francis NIXON and his parents. He was baptised in Clones, Co Fermanagh, in 1855 and parents were listed as Robert NIXON and Catherine MELARKEY on the baptismal record, which also states that he was illegitimate. I have found a marriage record indicating that a Catherine MELARKEY married a James LOVATT in 1858 and I can only think that this is my Catherine. So was Robert NIXON already married? There is certainly a marriage (if not two) of Robert Nixon in 1848 - one in Co Monaghan and one in Co Fermanagh but as Clones seems to straddle both counties, either of these could be my Robert. Was this an adulterous liaison? Did Catherine raise the child by herself or did Robert take the child into his own family? What happened to Robert? So many questions and no easy answers.

Hi Hallmark. I've looked at the summary records on Roots Ireland which don't give the Townland. I can't really afford to view the full entry though.

Cross referencing the  Robert Nixon marriage in 1848 Monaghan on RootsIreland and FamilySearch the spouse is Margaret Harper. The marriage was in Clones registry office.

Francis Nixon Baptism 1855 was in Clones RC.

Doing the same for the Robert Nixon marriage 1848 in Fermanagh we get Mary Hadwick in the Enniskillen District, there is no list of parishes to search.

But FamilySearch has one more that year a Margaret Finnegan but can't find a match for that couple on RootsIreland, so likely not Fermanagh or Monaghan.

FamilySearch also gives a Robert Nixon and Margaret Black in 1849, RootsIreland gives 2 results for these names in 1849 but both in County Down.
There a few more on FamilySearch for the period up to 1855 but the all give the county, none are Fermanagh or Monaghan.

Looking at some Clones/Roslea transcriptions I have seen the following. Not sure if any use to you.

There are two Catherine Malarky marraiges. Note that Malarky/Mularky/Melarky would have been interchangable back in those days.

1) Catherine Malarky from Tatymore to Peter McGlade from Killavilla on 5 Jul 1866.
2) Catherine Malarky from Granagore to James Maguire from Crocknagrally on 25 Feb 1868.
