Hello. Does anybody know what this means? At first I thought it said Ag Lab, but it appears to say Aug L. There are several entries the same on this particular census page. There are also entries which are clearly for Apprentice, so it is not that….
Thanks

It's always helpful to see the original census page, can you give the reference, or details? The L has proably been added by the clerk in the census office

August as in a summer/seasonal job?
Are all the entries with that working at the same place or are they in different households? ie like on a farm or something.

Ag Lab, Aug lab, guess say as you read, dialect, depends what area.
My guess possibly ag lab if there were many same area.
Just my initial thoughts, got many in my tree, but maybe wrong, just gut thought.

Thanks for your replies…..
The 1841 entry is Samuel Collinge, born 1818 in Lancashire. The Civil Parish is Prestwich cum Oldham, Samuel was living in Whitefield. No indication of whether it was on a farm….OOOPPPs! Just realised it was the entry above Samuel's that had this annotation (for a 10 year old) and another entry just down from Samuel's for 35 year old….Would a 10 year old be an ag lab?

10 yr olds in 1841 were expected to contribute to family income so yes, I would have thought that they would work as ag labs if that was the local labour market.

It wasn't until the 1842 Mines Act that no boy under 10 years old was to be employed underground.

Yes especially in rural areas, or if plot/s owned by family, would be expected, all hands on deck to earn, or give family profit, to feed, clothe, live.
