Title: Catherine Mckeane/Mckean/McKane born in Dublin 1862
Post by: stlowrey1 on Monday 11 August 14 08:13 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am researching Catherine Mckeane/Mckean/McKane born in Dublin 1862. I've had great difficulties locating her birth record over the past few years, gave up, so I thought I would try again.
Catherine was born in Dublin 1862 according to the 1911 England census in the town of Whitehaven. She married John Lowrey on July 1st 1880 in Stoke Damerel, Devon, England at the Michael & Joseph Roman Catholic Church.
Catherine's father was a career military soldier named John Francis Mckeane born 1818 in Ennistymon, County Clare and died in 1895 Whitehaven,Cumberland,England. John's military records indicate that he spent leave in Dublin.
Catherines father John McKeane married Catherine Baird (b.1843 Ireland) around 1861. The 1861 England census  shows Catherine Baird living in Preston, Lancashire, England as a Linen Spinner age 18.
That's about all the information I have to offer the group. I hope it is enough to go by and come up with a lead.

Thank you for your time.

Take care,

SL

Hi SL

WELL,

I have an interesting lead for you !

I have found a Kate McKeane baptised 1861 to a John McKeane & Catherine Baird in Laois, Ireland.

Given all the variables this HAS to be her.

Could she have been born 'out of wedlock' - do you have her parent's marriage ?

Could the 1861 Catherine Baird in England be incorrect and infact she was already married to John ?

Could Catherine have been born in Dublin, yet baptised in Laois - very possible, especially given that her father was a military man and was on the move.

Anyway, the record is on rootsireland which is a pay per view site.

It will be 4 euro to see a transcription of the church record.

It is pot luck as to what other info you will get on the transcription.

Please bear in mind that our civil registration only began in 1864 so there will be no civil birth record for her.

The free index on IFHF shows that she was baptised in Portlaoise which would have been St. Peter & Paul's Church.

It was demolished years ago and a new church stands in it's place but I did find this picture of the previous one !

Ancestry has that birth record and the original register image.
Not much more info on it other that the baptism took place on 24 April 1861.

That's great but for the life of me I can't see it ~

Were different spellings on it ?

Thanks

Hi Tara
Searched for Kate McKean 1861-
Ireland, Select Catholic Birth and Baptism Registers, 1763-1912
yep actually BAIRD is spelled BIERDS.
Can't find a corresponding marriage anywhere.

Super ~ Thanks

Hum, says he was residing in Maryborough (old name for Portlaoise)

HA, holidaying maybe.

Possibly just passing through as you HAD to go through Portlaoise in those days to get to a lot of other counties at the time ) prior to our lovely M7.

There were a few small military postings in the general Laois area so may have been posted there for a short time.

MAY have been dealing with Portlaoise Prison, in a military capacity for a while.

All just ideas for SL !

Anyway, it will be great for SL to see the original register.

Hello Tara & Hasta,

My goodness, what a lead indeed? I am so happy thank you ever so much.
Tara, I do not have Catherine's parents marriage unfortunately and yes the 1861 census might not be the same Catherine Baird for sure. The daughter Catherine being born in Dublin and baptised in Laois is also possible, I agree.
The next thing for me to do, is purchase those documents. :) Hasta, Beirdes is the spelling on Catherine & Johns other daughter Mary's birth certificate 1866 Miletown,Sheerness,England. I thought it was a mis-spelling.
Thank you for the links to the great old church. I will be investigating it further.
Off to purchase the documents.

Thank you again,
I'll be in touch with my findings.

:)

Hi SL

Do you have an ancestry subscription as the record is on that and will be better than what you get off rootsireland to be honest ?!

Let me know !

Hi Tara,

Yes I do have a subscription to ancestry. Thank you for asking. I'm just not very good at it.
You were right about ordering the record. There was not much in it. That's okay I had to find out.
Oh, btw good news. I found the marriage of Catherine Bierds & John Mckane on ancestry. June 17 1858 in Maryborough, Laois, Ireland. I now see a baptism record for a Catherine Baird in Laois 1841 I must check out.
I couldn't have done it without you and Hasta. :) John Mckane must have been stationed in Maryborough with the military at some time? John Mckeane was enlisted as #958 87th Regiment of Irish Fusiliers. His military record shows that he was released on Jan 13 1857. He was born in 1818 Ennistymon, County Clare. Looks like he was in prison alot too from 1845-1857. . lol

Back to my research.

Take care,
SL

WOW,

Sure that's great for a day's work  ;D

Hum, it would look towards Catherine being a Laois lady.

I'm just a 'blow in' to Laois, but I'm certainly interested to see if she is !

Super

There is a Richard Baird on the GV at Well Road, Maryborough (Portlaoise) which is quite literally around the corner from the church.

He is a good possibility as her father ~ fingers crossed.

The church record states that she resided in Maryborough, usually when this is the word used it means that she was from the town, as otherwise a townland name would be given.

Again, this ties in with Well Road ~ The New Road as it's VERY originally known as these days.

Funny, I only live down the road from there and the road is being dug up at the moment.

Sorry to ramble, but I hope by doing so it might bring her to life as it were  :)

Hi Tara,

So much has happened in the last 20 minutes since I last posted. LOL :)
I managed to find some baptismal records for Maryborough, Laois.

The parents being Richard Baird & Mary Kilford

Edward Baird March 31 1839
Richard Baird March 31 1839
Catherine Baird March 21 1841

also, this one seems suspicious

The parents being Richard Baird & Mary Guilfoyle (sounds like Kilford?)

Richd Baird Dec 11 1839

Do you think it's my Catherine?

Take care,

I'd be 99.99999999999999999999999 % Sure  ;D

If she wasn't a Portlaoise woman then she would have had to have gotten a dispensation, but she didn't so that means that she was 100% from the parish that was called Maryborough.

Yes, they are all children of Richard & Mary (surname of the Mum just mistranscribed)

So, looking at the GV Richard was NOT a farmer.

Depending on the part of the road, there were a few terraced two storey cottages, and further up some other little cottages,

Catherine would not recognise the street now I can tell you !

Yes, the best day ever!! :)
What a nice ol' pic of Wells Road. Thank you. I will add it to my family tree.
Oh, what I would give to visit the Father Ted show?
My relatives are going to be extremely happy with this news. Unbelievable. I guess it gives
me another reason to revisit Ireland, not that I need one.

I'll be a busy boy tonight with all this data. lol

Talk to you anytime Tara.

Sorry I just found this great article ~ relevant snippet

24 BAIRD AND BEARD FAMILIES

He says he has been unable to trace them.

[Probably most of them emigrated to America or Australia. The line of William
of Letterkenney is herein traced and probably that of John. The letter giving William's
record says his brother John's family settled at Bardstown, Ky.]

The Barde or Beard family of Ireland goes back to the time of Queen Eliza-
beth or earlier. The Beards or Bairds of Queens County spring from William
Barde or Beard, who was in Ireland under Sir Henry Sidney, Lord Deputy,
and must have borne an important part in the advance of the English army from
the Pale in 1557. As early as 1568 he was granted a messuage in Maryborough
comprising seven cottages, besides sixty acres arable and forty pasture, wood and
underwood in Colte; sixteen acres in Ballycorballe, all in Queen's County. He
may have been in Maryborough as early as the reign of Mary. 1 In 1570 Queen
Elizabeth granted the inhabitants of Maryborough a charter and corporation.
William Bard was probably a native of England. He died about 1583, as appears
from a grant (under a commission dated 1 7th Jan., 26th Eliz.) to Patrick Crosby,
Gent., of the wardship and marriage of Thomas Beard, son and heir of William
B., late of Colte.

Oh I also forgot to say that if the Aird theory works out then one of our local TD's is called William (Willie) Aird.

A popular FG man (not in my eyes I have to admit though ~ HA I don't know how well you know Irish politics).

Anyway, another IF to put on your 'to do' pile.

Hello Tara,

As you are aware of the surname spelling variance regarding Mary Kilford/Guilfoyle, I came across
a copy of Griffiths Valuation for Maryborough. I was surprised at the number of Guilfoyle inhabitants  during this time period 1847-1864. Do you think there is a chance that Mary is related? My search of Kilford's came up empty?

Thank you

SL

p.s
I am having a pint of Kilkenny watching a rerun of Brendan O'Carroll on the the Graham Norton Show. I know this has nothing to do with ancestry but I had to throw that in. :)
