Hi there
I have a Charles west born around 1810-1812 cuddesdon. My records show a father called Charles Harper and a mother Mary west. Just wondering if this was true and did Charles have any siblings??

I have a Charles west born around 1810-1812 cuddesdon. My records show a father called Charles Harper and a mother Mary west.
What records did you get this info from?
If his father was Charles Harper - was he illegitimate? If not - why was his surname West which was his mothers maiden name?

Hi
The baptism is entered in the All Saints Church, Cuddesdon PR's twice.
He is in there 29 Nov 1807 as Charles Harper and again the same day as Charles West. In both entries he is described as s o Charles Harper and Mary Wets base born of Cuddesdon
That does it then

And
there is a Mary West who married after banns in the same church on 21 Nov 1814 to Daniel Sanders of Chilton. Wits John West & Isabelle Sanders.
I cannot see a marriage in the parish between Charles and Mary so this marriage may be yours and may help your research?

Thanks ndrft sorry for the delay
Its all rather confusing would there be a reason for the change of names on the birth register??

Carole sorry for the delay
Its all rather confusing. A baptism record I cant get into just states that a charles west was baptised and the father is named as Charles Harper and the mother Mary west. Rather odd. Im going to go back again and make sure these are the right Wests for my tree.
Thank you for help
Kind regards

Hi Ian
The double entry for the baptism and the use of both names is not unusual. It is used in circumstances as actually stated where a child is base born i.e out of wed lock. It is clear that both families were eager to see right was done in the eyes of the church (and the village I suspect) and the father who was known was recorded.
Later the mother married but seemingly to another chap other than the childs father - not unusual then nor now!!!

Hi Ian
I am a bit short on time but this may help?
From the Oxfordshire Family History Society Marriage Index 1538 - 1837 I can see this;
Sarah Henton of Cuddesdon married on 28 May 1798 at Cuddesdon to Jesse Allen of Tilehurst

Ian,
Charles WEST married Sarah HENTON at Cuddeson on 24 September 1831. The only further information on the Oxfordshire Family History Society transcript is that the witnesses were Martha STONE and Henry YOUNG.
I did wonder whether Sarah was the Sarah SMITH who had married Simeon HENTON at Cuddeson on 20 December 1830, a marriage at which Charles WEST was a witness (as was a Sarah HARPER), but Simeon and Sarah HENTON had several children baptised later in the 1830s. The Sarah HENTON who married Charles WEST is probably the Sarah HINTON, daughter of Joseph and Jane, baptised at Cuddesdon on 22 May 1814, who was the younger sister of Simeon HINTON/ HENTON.

Thank you ever so much for your time and effort
Im a little confused at all the coincidences of the surname of the witnesses of West and Harper's. Beryllium intresting. I have seen a lot of hintons based in Cuddesdon and often wondered if it was Sarah's name. I will have to have another look at my mums bible. It stretches back to Sarah and Charles.ill get back ti you
Kind regards
Ian
