Title: Dead mans penny returned to family
Post by: gortonboy on Monday 04 August 14 20:17 BST (UK)
Hi ...thought id share this story with you all.Last week I went to visit a friend I hadn't seen in 25 years. He lives in Colwyn bay.Turns out we share a interest in all things military,so he showed me a dead mans penny he had acquired amongst a box of junk. After he learned of my interest in family history,,he asked if it was possible to research it,,and maybe return it to the family. This I did. I found out some information,,then posted what I knew on a facebook genealogy site local to area where the family of the man who had died in WW1 lived.Amazingly,,as this wasn't a very large group..a lady saw my post,,recognized the name,,and so showed the post to her elderly mum. Her mum said,,"i cant believe it,,thats Uncle Davids penny !! I was only thinking about him today because its the anniversary of the start of WW1...and I had been looking at another family members penny just this morning !! "  I was contacted today by the family,,and the penny will soon be back in Wales, hanging proudly next to the other one. I did ask for something in return,,and an email containing a photo of the family holding the penny will soon be winging its way to my inbox. :)  Hope you enjoyed my little tale.:D

Good work Gortonboy.

A few years after my mother died my brother found a dead manīs penny well hidden in a box of her belongings that he was sorting through. We didnīt know what it was to start with so the first part of the investigation was to find out what it meant. We knew which branch of the family it belonged to from the surname but had no idea who the individual was. So the research job was handed to me. We now know that he was our first cousin twice removed, who was in the Hood Division, Royal Naval Battalion.  He is one of those who has been remembered this weekend in the commemorations in our home town.
