Apologies if this has been posted before but a fantastic idea from the Royal British Legion. They all deserve to be remembered, whether in our 'trees' or not:

Seems that we are not allowed to remember them if they aren't on their database :(
Tried to enter a chap who was added to the CWGC database last week - but not to the copy underpinning this site.

Great idea but I have spent ages trying to place a poppy on a particular location for my g g uncle, still not sure if it has worked. Maybe it is more difficult because I am using my tablet. :-\
-
Hello Jool,
the placement process for a poppy is very slow.
You have to wait, to wait, to wait ...,
then you should move the poppy to the right place (fine tuning).
You are allowed to explain why you have placed it there.
They will ask for a donation.
Your poppy is shown on a little map right above the name.
Modification: You are allowed to place several poppies per person.
Regards
Rudolf
NB: I would like to enter the service number and the age of my g uncle. No chance.

Hi Rudolf, thanks for your response. I went through the fine tuning process and thought I had placed my poppy, I've been back on the site to check it is there but can't see it. I will have another look later when I have more time.

Placed one poppyt so far: no issues, found the zoom facility worked fine. Did have a bit of a problem in identifying exactly where to place the poppy at sea, with no landmarks, but managed a best-guess.
-
Thank you Jomot for posting the link, I hadn't heard of this. I've now placed poppies for both of my Great Uncles and written a little story for each - their ages were not there so added that into their stories.
regards
Elaine

I tried to place one "at sea" unsuccessfully-it did not seem to work for me :(
I also had a problem finding one of mine(which I knew was there somewhere) and went to FAQs where it suggested putting in less info-that worked !

Hello Kim & GrahamSimons,
you can put the coordinates in the field - it works fine.
If you enter: 57.05, 6.079167
You will get the position for the battlecruiser HMS Invincible - sunk Battle of Jutland, May 31, 1916.
Coordinates needed? Just ask.

I have written two stories and placed several poppies.
- No age and/or number: You should ask CWGC to change it in their database, it is used by the site.
- The whole story is written in one line without headlines and blocks. -
You should structure a longer story with CAPITALS and ">", "-", "*" or else ...
- If you want to remember someone with photo & story: Prepare everything & do a spell check.
Upload photo and story, - you are allowed to do a final edit.
When you hit the final button, no more edits and updates are allowed!
- I have put a link at the end of my stories. Each of my 'heroes' has his own post in my blog,
where I am posting updates and new results of my searches.
Regards
Rudolf
NB: There is no visible LOGIN-Button. Try to place a poppy, you will be asked to register.
Than look for the line where you can log in ...

Hi RudolfHB
Thank you for your help-I think the answer possibly lies in the fact that this ship was "missing" and as far as I can see (googleing) it is not known where she lies but she is a listed "war grave"
The SS Adriatic (cargo) sailed from Newport and was lost 31 October 1916
My ancestor was born in 1900-enlisted in the Army in 1915 giving his age as 19
Was discharged in March 1916 due to "mis statement of age" and immediately enlisted in the Mercantile Marine so was only 16 when he died :(

Hi Kim,
too young to die. :( I have just entered his ship in the English Wikipedia.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Adriatic (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Adriatic)
She might be lost in the Biscay - drifting mine or torpedo, October storm or monster wave ...

Unfortunately, the site does not include the people who died as a result of their war injuries after they were discharged from the services. They should also be remembered.
-
@ philipsearching,
are they on the CWGC site? - May be something for the "in from the cold project"?
They can be entered here (and all the surviving ones): https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/ (https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/)
- Free registration, subscription is needed, when you want to link a group together (by regiment or by town ...)
Rudolf
NB: In my town in Germany, there are war graves with the years 1921 and 1922.

Thank you Rudolf :)
