Hello all. I was hoping for some advice. I am looking for the parents of my 3xs g-grandfather.
His name is Henry Hatton. I have his baptism record from West Yorkshire, Parish of Bradford, St Peter (Bradford Cathedral) - born September 16, 1819, baptized on March 26, 1934 (15 years later). Anyway, on the record it lists Thomas and Mary Hatton as his parents, but Thomas is crossed out and Mary is listed as a spinster. I am wondering what "the RC experts" think - if "Hatton" was Thomas' surname prior to being crossed out (in which case I don't know who Mary is), or if Mary Hatton is his mother's maiden name (in which case I don't know who his father is).
As I am writing, I am wondering if ordering the birth record is the only way to shed some light?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

As Henry was born in 1819. there will be no "birth record". If he married Annis Hayley 29 April 1844, then the name and occupation of father is left blank (i.e. assume father unknown) From this, I would assume Mary Hatton is his mother, a spinster, and you may never know who Henry's father was.

Right... Looks like another dead end.
Thank you very much Goughy. I appreciate your response.

Something for you to look at - could be totally wrong thinking, but...
There is another Henry Hutton baptised in Bradford in 1816 to a James and Sarah Hutton. I looked up and found a baptism for James Hutton to Thomas and Catherine Hutton. I also found a Mary Hutton 1783 with parents Thomas and Catherine Hutton. You never know, when baptising Henry, Mary will have been asked father's name and she could have said Thomas (her father) and the error was recognised and the name Thomas crossed out. Pure speculation I know!

Thank you for your further work on this one Goughy. Once again, I appreciate the help and suggestions. That IS an interesting theory and (as we all know) stranger things have happened.
I like how it sounds and will keep it in mind and try to figure out how I can try to verify a little. (Maybe check for siblings of Mary and look for naming patterns down the line or something - ?)
Thanks.

Have you looked for Henry Hatton b 1819 on the 1841 census, age can be with 5 years on the 1841 census. Then see who his living with ? - There could be a bastardy order on his father in 1819 in the quarter session, or a record of this payment to Henry's mother from the father, paid through the Overseers of the poor records, in the parish of birth of Henry or his mothers parish of birth and also parish relief payments to the mother for Henry's up keep from the parish overseers.
