Hi
I have just been informed by the MOD that they don't issue medals from ww1 now, does anyone know where I can get them, if at all possible?
Many thanks

I think miniature medals made at the time are worth looking at. What medals are you looking for?

for examples

Hi ken
Thank you for your reply, the British, Victory and the 14 star, I think that's what it says on the medal card

Hi Dawn,
you mean "Pip, Squeak and Wilfred".

A Guide to British Campaign Medals of WW1
"When the WW1 medals were issued in the 1920's it coincided with a popular comic strip published by the Daily Mirror newspaper."

NB: My surving grand uncle got Pip, Squeak,Wilfried & Military Cross,
his brother Pip, Squeak, Wilfried & a name plate in Thiepval. *)
*): Squeak added in both lines,
after the following comment and a second study of the MICs.

??
Surely you couldn't get 'Pip' (1914 or 1914-15 Star) without 'Squeak & Wilfred' (aka 'Mutt & Jeff').

If you are going to buy replicas, don't forget that the Mans name/rank/number and regiment were inscribed around the edge on the British War Medal and victory Medal and on the back for the 1914 &. 1914-15 Stars.
Incidentally if a serviceman was not awarded either of the Stars then he would not have seen active service before 1916. The 1914 Star was issued to those who saw active service in France and Belgium between 5th Aug and 22nd Nov 1914. A bar clasp inscribed "5 Aug. to 22 Nov. 1914" was given to all those who qualified for the 1914 Star and who served under fire. Since the same ribbon is used with the 1914-15 Star, holders of the 1914 Star were permitted to wear a small silver rosette on their ribbon when the decoration itself is not worn. On the medal index cards this is usually noted as the "Clasp and Roses" or "C&R" .It was necessary to apply for the issue of the clasp. The 1914-15 Star was awarded to those who saw active service in a theatre of war before 31st Dec 1915 but did not qualify for the 1914 Star.

Hi,
many thanks to newburychap and Greg for your information.
I Have studied the MICs a second time and found a little " (more like a comma) between long lines for the Squeak medal.
Best regards

Hi, Just a bit of a long shot, If you go onto the well known on-line auction site EBay and search the medals and ribbons category you can put a soldiers name in the search, you may sometimes come up with a hit.
I have done it on several occasions when looking for medals.
Frank.
