dear all
I have an Ehglish Tiffin ( yes, a curious name ) who marries an Elizabeth Abbott, 18-04-1799, st Gregory, Subury.
So far I have found that they have 2 daughters ; Elizabeth b 16-04-1800, Sarah b 05-01-1803, both births given as Sudbury, Suffolk (sorry, Family search entries) most probably living at the time at Middleton, attending Church at Sudbury and moving to Sudbury at a later time.
I am hoping that English and Elizabeth make it to the 1841 or even the 1851 census's and that someone can find them for me ::)
all the best
Pete

Im not seeing a death for English Tiffin on freebmd, so I guess he died pre 1837 ( there is one in 1854 for a James English Tiffin in Marylebone, guess there is some connection)
-
National Archives has a Death Duty Register for a English Tiffen;
Name: English Tiffen
Residence Place: Bulmer, Essex, England
Death Date: Abt 1806
Record Date: 12 Dec 1806
Record Place: London, London, England

yes, "James English Tiffin", there must be a connection there somewhere ;)
wow, 1806 ! he didnt make it very far after marrying and having 2 daughters ! and Bulmer, yet another village to investigate ::)
thanks Trish
thinking further ; what is a "Death Duty Register" did he have to pay Tax after he was dead :P lol
Does Bulmer have a Church I wonder ? I'm thinking gravestone inscriptions now,,,,,
-
I notice that the records for the two girls are both non-conformist. Worth remembering.
Some other James English Tiffin records are on Ancestry too, eg chr 1815, Suffolk parents William and Dinah.
Or chr 1820, birth 1818, non conformist Bocking Essex, parents Timothy and Mary.
So at least 2 James English Tiffins around! And seemingly one lot in Suffolk and one lot in Essex at that time.

thanks for this link, really cool site,,,,, on looking further, I saw the site is dedicated to the late "Basil Slaughter" which jogged something in my memory,,,
on searching for the illusive "Elizabeth Tiffin" I believe I came across many candidates, one of whom was the daughter of a John Tiffin and an Elizabeth Slaughter both of Halstead, Essex, also of a st Andrews church :P I seem to remember I dismissed her as a possibility as her birth was 4 years out or something like that,,,, but now I am having second thoughts again,,, Hmmm

Witnesses Timothy and Elizabeth Boosey
(FreeREG)
MARY ELIZABETH Tiffin was Christened 13 March 1831 to TIMOTHY BOOSEY Tiffin and MARY Tiffin
She is likely a Sibling of JAMES ENGLISH Tiffin with Parents TIMOTHY/MARY 1820 Bocking
1861 she is a Cook in the Household of ? Boosey, 35, Unm, who runs a Ladies Boarding School in Bocking.
Cant find her before that.
AH, 1851 she is Elizth Tiffin age 20 with Sarah Mary BEASEY (sic) in Bocking.
1841 has a TIMOTHY Tiffen c 1791 living in Bocking, Occp Miller.
-
Sorry , should have stated that the 1757 baptism in Lavenham ( on familysearch ) was Non-Conformist and that the couple were of Acton , a village close to Lavenham.
-
OK, James English and Mary E's Father was Timothy Boosey TIFFEN, Bachelor of Stepney, Middlesex, who married Mary BOOSEY, Spinster, 23 Jan 1818, St Mary, Bocking
(FreeREG)
So was Timothys Father WILLIAM who married another Mary BOOSEY 1783.
The 1841 Census may be Timothy.

OK, getting kinda confused here ???, time for a recap ( for my that is ) ;
forgetting siblings etc, there are 3 x "James English Tiffin's" ;
the first ; parents are William Tiffin and Dinah Cooke, whom marry 1804, Hadleigh, Suffolk. birth/chr unkown.
the second'; parents are Thomas Tiffin and Elizabeth (unknown), marriage (unknown), son is chr 31-05-1757, Lavenham, Suffolk.
the third ; parents are Timothy Tiffin and Mary (unkown), marriage (unknown), son is chr 1820, birth 1818, non conformist Bocking Essex.
One of these is my "English Tiffin" without the James ? the second one as suggested by Christine

I will get back to this later and try and put it in some kind of possible time-line :)

Suffolk Record Office has 27 results in their catalogue for the name Tiffen / Tiffin , including one for the Will of Thomas Tiffen of Acton , dated 1772. I don't know where you are based or what copying services they offer so I've tried to post a link to the list of results but it doesn't ' stick'. This will take you to the search page :
http://www.suffolkheritagedirect.org.uk/ - Just put the surname in the keyword search box , making sure to try both spellings. The search is across various sources and you need to wait for the Record Office results to load.

Hi all,
I can see that this is an old thread (2014), but I have recently come across a ref. in the Ipswich Journal of a Mr. Tiffen, of Acton, Suffolk (miller) who married a Miss Hart (from Newton, Suffolk). The marriage was listed om 01/10/1791.
Any first names would be good starting point, and whether related to Timothy Tiffen of Bocking, Essex, also a miller.
Cheers,
Windy
-
there is a marriage between Samuel Tiffen and Sarah Hart on 28-09-1791 at Great Waldingfield, Suffolk. Do you have any other information? a location would be great
-
Hi Petey22,
Well, that seems like my man. The only info I have is as follows:-
“Wednefday was married at Acton, Mr. Tiffen, miller, to Mifs Hart of Newton.”
From the Ipswich Journal (1791/10/01).
Looking at my windmill records; there was no mill (wind or water) at Acton, and little info on this early date on the millers at Gt. Waldingfield. However, there do appear to have been at least two windmills there, so he might have worked one.
