Title: Can't find Sidney Smith on 1911 census - any suggestions?
Post by: shazs on Saturday 26 July 14 12:38 BST (UK)
I can't find my great grandfather and family including my grandmother on the 1911 census. I apologise for the long list below but it' s all the info I have found on him. He was a stonemason and worked away from his home of Erdington Warwickshire. In 1904 he was in London and by 1914 he was in the Hampshire regiment of the army. I've ruled out any known relatives' homes in case the family had split up. Any suggestions of where/ how to find him would be greatly appreciated.

1881 census
Age 0 months
59 GT Colmore street Birmingham
Father George - a master stonemason

1891 census
Age 10

Father George T W - Stonemason

1901 census
Age 19 Occupation Stonemason
26 Queen Street Sutton Coldfield
Father George - Stonemason

18th June 1904 marriage certificate
Spouse Elizabeth Rabin
Residence 245 Gravelly Lane

December 1904 birth certificate of Sidney's daughter Ethel Lilian
Residence Harleyford Road Kensington London
Occupation Stonemason

1911
Cannot find Sidney, Elizabeth, Ethel or other children
(Edith/Edie born 1907 location unknown and Sidney George born 1908, location unknown)

1911 census
Sidney's father-in-law living at 253 Gravelly Lane, Erdington ,Warwickshire

1912 Midlands electoral roll
Sidney living at 257 Gravelly Lane Erdington

1914 Army attestation sign up record for a Sidney Smith
Birth date does not tally with my Sidney but signing up to army in Southampton Hampshire, born in Birmingham, in Birmingham rifle volunteers and  working as labourer but occupation is stonemason.

This ties in with next record:-

1918 Midlands electoral roll - Absent voters' list

Army Medal Roll
Pte 13831 awarded Victory medal, British service medal and 14/15 Star

Hello,

Free BMD has births for Nellie E -December  1911 and Florence A - June 1914 in Aston district both with parents Smith/Rabin.
Maybe those certificates would give you further clues.

There are 2 births for Sidney George in Aston in 1907 and 1908

regards

We can't do 1911 lookups, but you can follow the houses by clicking on the right arrow at the bottom of the page for 253 Gravelly Lane.

Hi Jaywit,

Thank you both,
Yes I've checked all Gravelly lane and Queens St (where Sidney's parents live) in 1911 but no luck.
The certificates are a good idea when I' ve got the money!
It's been useful just listing everything I already knew, straight away the gap was there for the birth location of the other children.
I've also not had any luck searchingwith his occupation of stonemason, but I'm not sure just how good the search parameters are on FindMyPast and Ancestry.

Interested too as he is also my great grandfather.
I think someone told me he had lost a leg but need to check this out.
Difficult to find Smiths!

Markaw - wow a relative! How are you related to him. I'm from his daughter Ethel's branch of the family. I've just found out this week that he had a second family after his first wife died. I knew he'd been remarried but didn't know he had more children.

and yes the Smith's are a pain to trace!

I've remembered Sidney at Lives of the First World War https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/4163880 (https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/4163880)
