Dear Forum,
Any ideas on a date or what might be held up in her hands? sorry best I can do regarding resolution regards Jason
-
Looks a bit like a map that she is holding.
-
Agree it does look like a map but the texture/lines that make it seem so appear on the rest of the picture. On my PC, at any rate. She's obviously very pleased to have got it - an award or membership to something, perhaps?
Taken in the 1880's I would say as the puffy sleeve has not appeared, unless she is slightly behind the fashion and is not wearing fashionable clothes. Which would make the relaxed pose more likely for a later date - say 1890 to early 1900's.
not very helpful, I know but older people make it dfficult by not keeping up with fashion. I certainly don't.
Regards
AJ

Sorry but those aren't 1880s sleeves...about 1905 or so. It might be helpful if we could see the whole thing please including the outer corners of the mount. There won't be anything on the back.
Cheers,
China

Agree with China & may even be up to WW1 depending on how fashionable she was.

2x Logo of YMCA or YWCA (invented 1890/91)

Dear Jason,
no feedback up to now, has she been YWCA member or activist?

I would say 1910 to 1925. I would also guess she wears an employer's uniform and she holds her new contract of employment; at the big house ?
-
Thank you Neil,
it could be a contract, nice idea!
According to our experts the dating is a little bit earlier.

Any ideas for the jewellery on her chest ?
-
Hi Neil,
China and Jim are experts in clothing, photographers and jewels (I suppose).
The missing thing in this thread had been the paperwork in her hands ...

Chain for a half hunter I would say.
-
I do think this is a servants' uniform so would have to guess that her room key was at the end of the chain. She wouldn't need her own timekeeper with so many clocks in the "big house" and an unchanging domestic routine. All conjecture of course.
-
Not a servant's uniform, this is normal daywear for the period.
Watches were a very popular accessory.
Not sure where the big house came from.
Anyway I think we're talking to ourselves as the poster seems to have lost interest.
-
Thank you everyone, you all seemed to have just as much interest and enjoyment in exploring this photo as me. The poster has a life outside posting requests and may not be in a position to jump on top of every update. I have never taken the support and assistance from this forum for granted and have turned to this forum for several years now as a source of support and expert opinion. Once again thank you for providing your thoughts and information, regards Jason

Could the chain be for a chatelaine perhaps? Not sure if they were ever tucked in.

Good evening,
Could she be the housekeeper, they didn't always wear a uniform as such. Possibly at an YMCA given that's what it looks like on the piece of paper. She is also in a large important building, lots of fine panelling and a very nice stained glass window with one or more coats of arms, or similar, in it.
