1871 census has a Joseph Harper 1830 in Bridgeton, Glasgow, retired army.
Wife Elizabeth 1842.
Children born in East Indies: Elizabeth 10, Joseph 5, John 3
Born in Glasgow: James 0
Significant age difference between Joseph and Elizabeth, so you may also want to consider whether the first 3 children may have belonged to your elusive Isabella or whether Elizabeth is the wife you are looking for.

You beauty! thats him in the 1871 census .. she was 14yrs old when they married in India .. I have the birth cert. He was in India for few years and they had kids there then they went back to Scotland and came to Australia in 1880. Does the census say his birth place?

must add... This Joseph Harper in the 1871 census parent is Joseph and Isabella.

1871 census, 126 Reid Street, Bridgeton, Glasgow:
Joseph Harper, 41, army pensioner (no regular occupation), born Glasgow
Elizabeth Harper, 29, born Glasgow
Elizabeth Harper, 10, born east Indies
Joseph Harper, 5, born East Indies
John Harper, 3, born East Indies
James Harper, "0", born Glasgow
James Lindsay Harper was born to Joseph Harper and Elizabeth Nelson in Bridgeton, Glasgow on 21st November 1870. If you check the original birth certificate on Scotlandspeople (lots of posts here about how to do that), it should give the date and place of his parents' marriage, if you don't have that already. As for Joseph senior giving his place of birth on the census as Glasgow, it is not unusual for folk to be vague and inconsistent about their parish of birth on censuses.
