Title: Rymer Thompson Hull
Post by: lesleyhannah on Monday 27 June 05 20:14 BST (UK)
I'm trying to trace my grandfather's family, the Macdougals. They originally came from Dumfries, but moved to Hull. My grandfather's sister, Sarah Macdougal, b. c.1879, married William Rymer Thompson, b. c 1878, in Sculcoates, Hull. He was described as an auctioneer.

I've traced two children, Annie and Kenneth.

Does anyone from Hull have the Rymer Thompsons on their family trees? Does anyone remember Rymer Thompson auctioneers?

Would be grateful for any information.
Thanks.
Lesley

Hi
It is always difficult to know what information people already have but I found William easily in 1881 and 1901 with his parents, William Hyde Thompson and Ann Wardman Thompson, and lots of siblings.    You can search the 1881 free but if you want 1901 let me know.   He is already following in his father's footsteps in 1901 and is an Auctioneer & Valuer (though not the local preacher!)

Thanks for your interest Andrea. I had traced the family on the census, but am grateful for your trouble. My grandfather lost contact with all his family as a young man - none of us know why, maybe just too lazy to keep in touch when he moved from Hull. I'm really hoping to find relatives in Hull descended from the Macdougals. I know granddad's eldest sister married Wm Rymer Thompson, and I hoped someone else would have the family on their tree. It's a long shot, I know, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again for replying.
Regards,
Lesley

Hi Lesley,

Kenneth Rymer Thompson was my grandfather.  There not in Hull anymore, the Rymer Thompson's moved to scarborough, north yorkshire many years ago (at least 80).  Kenneth or Ken had one son, my father Michael.  Then there are two grandchildren.  I hope this message finds you well and i await a reply.

If you want any more information on the Rymer Thompson family tree do contact me, I have portraits of Sarah and William.

Regards
Lorna

Lorna - lovely surprise to get your message.  At the moment I'm in the process of having my flat decorated, and my computer has been dismantled (I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms). Am using a friend's laptop - I will definitely contact you by Personal Message as soon as a little bit of order has been resumed.

The name Rymer-Thompson was regularly mentioned during my childhood in the 1940s/50s - I've done lots of research on my granddad's family, but still have loads of unanswered questions. I also think I have a photograph of Sarah/Cissie who married Mr R T - however it's buried in the non-working computer. Hopefully you'll be able to identify her if I ever manage to put all the cables in the right places without blowing self and neighbours up!

Thanks again for your reply. I will be in touch, and look forward to hearing from you.

Amazing the contacts you can make through Rootschat - even after six years!

Lesley

Hi
How exciting that you have made contact.  However, Lorna needs to make another post before you can use our personal message system.  Just click reply to this Lorna and it should work then by clicking on the green scroll under the user names.

Hi Lesley,
Glad to see a reply so quickly.  I'm currently back in scarborough visiting my father and grandmother as I live in Ireland now.  I will be able to take a photo of the paintings and show you.  I wouldn't be able to recognise sarah, but my father would.  My father would think that Edith and Hannah sarah's sisiters would be in your photos.  My father has also found our family tree which i may be able to photocopy at a later date.

So where are you living at present?

Funny how 'googleing' my name brings me to this website.

Awaiting your reply

Lorna

rymer thompson, an unusual name, but I did buy a house of a rymer thompson in Scarboro in 1963. he was in the business of buying and selling property after giving them a lick of paint etc.
Could be one of yours perhaps? He was an oldbloke at the time and very hard of hearing.
I seem to recall him living in Cromwell Road Scarboro

yes he would of been my grandfather, ken rymer thompson.  He dealt in properties for years and converted the big victorian and georgian houses into flats and easier things like redeocrating ect.   he even built the house we moved into years ago, and we only found out he built it years after he died when we were sorting through old documents ect.  where was the property you bought?

Although this is not really related I thought it may be of some interest - my grandfather recently passed away and among the many items he left behind I inherited a very solid and heavy safe.  The safe was made by a company from West Bromwich and I am trying to understand it's history and possible value - what is interesting though is that it has a sticker on the inside identifying a company called Rymer Thompsons as the supplier.

They appear to be a company in Hull and called themselves Office and Home furnishers - is this related to your family and do you have any info of when this company traded etc?

Hi Mark,

Sorry its taken me so long to write back to you, been very busy.

I asked my dad when the Rymer Thompson would of had the auction house in hull and he cant remeber the exact dates but it would of been around 1880's - 1920's ish!  I've only ever seen a picture of the outside of the auction house, we couldn't tell you where it was or anything like that.  Hope the dates help you a little.

Hi there, I'm amazed to find this site with the info i have found on here i can now kind of pin point where my friends safe came from.. I so far have found out William rymer thompson supplied the safe and that William had an auctioneer in hull between the 1940-s and 1950s. I would like to find out more as we would like to value the safe as we have been told it is over 100 years old and it would also help if anyone has any pictures of the auctioneer house and William himself  :) Any info much appreciated and i will also post any pics i come across and a pic of my friends safe shortly!
