I am looking for any information on John Phillips who married Elizabeth (late Watkins formerly Williams, this is what it says on her son's birth certificate in 1838) possibly in Chepstow. Their children William b.?, John b. 1816, Chepstow. Edward b. 1815-17 Chepstow. James b. 1822, Itton. Eliza Susannah b. 1831, Itton. Emma b. 1833 Itton. Charles b. 1838 Itton.
william was married to Mary Ann Gordon in 1843 Woolwich, Kent. Most of the brothers were living in Kent at this time. We don't know much about the Phillips family in Monmouthshire so any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello Barbarai,
The attached photo may open up another avenue for you. This is the late John Phillips, a contemporary of mine and one time head boy of Ebbw Vale Grammar School., Monmouthshire. It was taken when I unexpectedly came across him in the middle of the bay of Biscay on board Ark Royal in about 1974.
John died suddenly after retiring from the Navy. I believe he married a daughter of the owner of the Central Cafe in Ebbw Vale - I have tried to trace her to pass on the photo but so far without success.
Best of luck with your searches.

Hi Barbarai, You asked me once which Phillips were mine as i was also looking in Mon & Kent. Do blacksmiths work alongside Wire workers which mine were. Im back to JOHN PHILLIPS from Tintern/ Chapel Hill born abt 1808. I bet going back one more generation there could be brothers with the resulting offspring. Unless there were loads of Phillips from Mon in the Woolwich/ Plumstead areas. Best Wishes, Phil

Hi Phil
I have got back to John Phillips, ( a blacksmith), b.abt.1792 Itton/Chepstow area, He married twice and had 11 children, all in the Chepstow/Itton area, 5 of his sons Edward b.1815, John b.1816, William b.1818 (my 3x gt. grandfather), James b.1822 and Charles b.1838. The oldest 4 came to Woolwich/Plumstead in the early 1840's and Charles joined them some time later (marrying William's wife's sister).
William was a blacksmith/metal worker at the Royal Arsenal. I'm afraid i don't know what a wire worker is, so don't know if they worked alongside blacksmiths.
There are many monmouthshire born people in the Woolwich/ Plumstead area, so there could vey well be other unrelated Phillips lines around.
I have not yet found John Phillips' baptism or even his first marriage details as i cannot get to monmouthshire to look at the parish records.
Which Phillips do you have in the area?
Regards
Barbarai

IS there any evidence of any of these went to Australia.
I realize this is an old thread but I am desperately looking for Edward Phillips b1815 who left UK when he was 18 and went to Upper Canada.

Hi, is anyone able to help with Samuel Phillips son of Mary and Thomas Phillips baptised 1808 St Saviours Southwark.
Thanks

Hi Chris
PHILLIPS is not an uncommon name - you might do better to post on the Canada and Middlesex boards respectively for your missing ancestors - unless you know them to be related to the family in this thread?
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
