Hi,
Does anyone have access to the 1861 Anwoth Census?
I'm trying to find information on my great grandfather George Dunbar, or rather on his parents James & Elizabeth.
IGI record: George Dunbar or Gordon
Birth 19 Nov 1854
Christening 14 Jan 1855, Anwoth
Father James Dunbar
Mother Elizabeth Gordon
I'm trying to find the ages/birth places of James and Elizabeth but by th 1871 Census he was lodging on Fleet St, Gatehouse of Fleet, so no mention of his parents.
Thanks,
Kevin

Just seen your message. I dont have access to the 1861 Anwoth census but I do have the 1841.
There is a Peter Dunbar living at Killern Mill aged 9 (no parents listed)and in Back Fleet Street I found the following -
GORDON Esther 33
Mary 6
Elizabeth 5
John 1
This could be your family. Have you looked on Scotland's People?

Hi there.
I've assumed that that Gordon family may be mine, they're listed in the 1851 Census where Elizabeth is 14. There is also a James Dunbar who's 15 living on South Side of Back Street, Gatehouse of Fleet. I think these may be the ones I'm looking for, but it's all just conjecture.
Unfortunetly I haven't been able to find George's birth on Scotland's People, possible because he was born so close to the change-over from Old Parish to Statutory Registers.
Hopefully in a few weeks when the 1861 census goes online I'm be able to find him and confirm whether or not my suspicions are correct.

Hi there.
Well I've found George in the 1861 census on ScotlandsPeople ( or George Dimbar as they have him indexed as!).
No sign of his parents though. He's listed as a boarder in the house of a Mary McRobert. However the good thing is that Mary's mother is also in the house, and she is Esther Gordon aged 50. I assume then that Esther is George's grandmother.
No sign of George's father, James, though, at least not in Kirkcudbright.
I'm speculating the George's mother, Elizabeth Gordon died when he was young, possibly even in childbirth as I haven't been able to find a death cert. I know that she was deceased by the time of his marriage in 1876 and I have not been able to find her death on ScotlandsPeople.
As to his father still no further along. I believe that it is the James that I found on the 1851 census, but even if it is that puts up another stumbling block as James' father Joseph, is listed as being born in Ireland.
So unless I can find more information or have a sudden burst of inspiration, then I guess that's as far back as I can go with the Dunbars.

Hi there Jeanette,
I gather that your great-grandfather, William Baird Dunbar was my grandfather's (Joseph Tweedie Dunbar) brother.
I think that George (their father) was probably been burried in Johnstonebridge in Dumfriesshire but I'm not 100% certain.
I have George's marriage cert, death cert, census returns, if you PM me with your email address I'd be able to forward these onto you, along with any other info I have.

My great grandfather William Baird Dunbar married to Agnes Scott, his parents were George Dunbar and Jane Baird.
Grandparents were James Dunbar and Elizabeth Gordon (daughter of Robert Gordon and Esther/Hester McTier of Gatehouse) and great grandparents were Joseph Dunbar and Sarah Jamieson (daughter of Joseph Jamieson and Margaret McKean of Girthon, Kircudbright)
William's siblings were James, Andrew, George, Mary Jane, Joseph, Jane and Jessie.
According to my father his grandfathers both worked on the railway and lived at Kirkgunzeon.
