Title: Johnstone/ Callaghan england to US Pennsylvania and back to Huddersfield
Post by: Marcia Hay on Monday 14 July 14 09:21 BST (UK)
My great grandmother was born 1878? Elizabeth Johnstone  daughter of Michael Johnstone and Catherine Callaghan. She was born in Pennsylvania along with one other sister. The family moved back to Huddersfield where he was a fish seller. and more children were born.
I would like to  confirm when they moved to Pennsylvania ans when they returned to England. I would like to know how I could access birth records for my great grandmother in Pennsylvanis. She married William  Casford.
 :)  Thanking you in advance
Marcia

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
Just a couple of questions so we do not duplicate work you have already done.

- Do you know the names and birth dates of the other children?

- Have you identified the family in any census on either side of the Atlantic?

How certain are you that they were born in the US

If you have found this information via any Trees on Ancestry, I would take it with a pinch of salt.

We have all found family members on Ancestry trees (owned by US members), born in some remote part of the UK, marry in the UK, emigrate to the US, yet miraculously every year a child is born they come home and return to the US every time!  Then when they are dying they come home to die and are buried in the churchyard of very same remote village!!!!

Pennsylvania’s Department of Health began keeping birth and death records on a statewide basis on January 1, 1906. Your search for a birth record would probably need to be done through church records - you would need to know the area of Pennsylvania that the family lived in.

The death of Catherine seems to come under Johnston not Johnstone - Catherine Johnson - born 1850 and died 1888 Oct/Nov/Dec  - 9a 235. Huddersfield Yorkshire.

Noticed the first daughter Mary Elizabeth Johnston born about 1875 America  - UK incoming passenger lists don't start until 1878 so the family might not be recorded entering the UK with the 2 children.

Here they are in 1881  4384/ 67/ 32

7 Mills Yard Huddersfield

Michael Josh. Johneshaw  31 yrs  General Labourer b Ireland
 Catherine   30 yrs  b Ireland
Mary Ellen   7 yrs  b USA British Subject
Elizabeth Ann   5 yrs  b USA  British Subject
 Bernard   1 yr b Huddersfield

The census does look a bit like that name.

Bernard is James Barnard b 1880
Catherine dies 1888 aged 38 yrs

It would be quite likely that Michael and Catherine married in Ireland and emigrated to Pennsylvania before returning to England.
At the moment though I can't see a marriage in County Mayo - which Michael gives as p o b.

Thank  you  Sandra! I have  found the same results as you as far as the census 1891  and 1901. He was a widow at age 40 in 1891 census and a daughter Kathleen Mildred died at age 10 weeks and mother died not long later. Believe her name was Catherine Callaghan but have no real proof except Elizabeth Casford ( nee Johnston) death certificate says mother's name was Catherine.
I wanted to see when they went to America? Michael Johnston was born in 1851 in County Mayo. Just wondered whether it was to do with potato famine in Ireland?? :D
all I need now is a shipping list to see when they went to America.   cannot find them in 1881 census? in England so I figure they must have married about 1873+ ?  and then returned 1882?? Just a guess but need proof. ???

See my reply #8 re 1881

James Barnard's birth certificate would confirm Catherine's maiden name.

James Barnard Johnston   June 1880    Huddersfield  9a 371

Yes, the Australian Death Index for Elizabeth Casford  who died 3 May 1950 Queensland  says mothers name was Callahan.

Sandra,
thank you so much for your help.My mother is Norma Grace Casford born 1930 and my only Aunt is Anne Maud b 1925. I am trying to get a time line done for her grandmother Elizabeth Anne Casford  for her 87th birthday NEXT week. For years she has been trying to find out why they went  to America and when they came back. So I have a start. Just wish I could find the name of the ship they went out on must have been about 1874??

Marcia,

they may have married in Mayo as I said before but they may have emigrated earlier and met and married there.
You could see if there are any sightings in US censuses. There was a lot of migration to Scranton area from County Mayo.
You know they returned pre 1880 but not sure re any immigration records before then.
Wondering why they moved to Huddersfield - I can see Callaghans (Sligo) there but no Johnstons.

On James' army papers, he gives St Patrick's parish as his place of origin.
Parish records for Huddersfield St Patrick's are held at Kirklees (http://www.archives.wyjs.org.uk/documents/archives/Collections%20Guide%205.pdf).
Some Catholic records can be quite helpful as they sometimes contain other bits of information- sometimes not!  However,  it may be worth noting this just in case.
