Gday,
I have been studying one branch of my family (DUTHIE) history for a little while now. I am to the point where my G G Grandfather, heavily pregnant wife and five small children embarked on the barque Ashmore for the three month passage from Scotland to the other side of the world, Port
Adelaide.
The family arrived at Port Adelaide during October 1884, just in time for the average South Australian summer.
I have a good deal of info, although there are some gaps, from their arrival at Port Adelaide in 1884, the children of James and Jane, and the ever expanding branches of this tree up to recent times.
So, James Duthie b1854 Forfarshire and Jane b1849 Forfarshire (nee Boath) are who I am interested in from the point of view of their life prior to packing up and moving to South Australia.
If anyone out there can shed some light on where/how they lived, or share some advice on where to look for more information, I would be very grateful.
Kind regards
Glenn D

Hello & welcome
SP is the place to look.
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Error/denied.aspx
Scotland's People have digitalised their marriage certs. post 1855 & for a few credits you can download it. Apart from father's names you will also get mother's names including maiden names.
This will confirm if Jane is the one who's parents are at the bottom & also those of James.
There's this family:
1881 Scotland census
Add: Barry Village Angus
James Duthie 29 b. Maryton Forfarshire occ: ploughman
Jane Duthie 30 b. Forfar do
William Duthie 8 b. do do
John Duthie 6 b. Panbride do
James Duthie 4 b. Auchterhouse do
Alexander Duthie 2 b. Panbride do
Maryton is just outside Kirriemuir, Angus
Forfarshire & Angus are one in the same.
Ages are a bit out but that's not unusual.
James & Jane married 18/6/1872 Forfar.
Is this them ?
The only birth for Jane Boath I can see is in St. Vigeans 1845.I don't think it's her.
She could be this one from 1861 b. Welton Forfarshire
Dunnichen Village F'shire. abt. 9 mls. from Maryton.
James Fettes 38
Ann Fettes 31
John Fettes 8
James Fettes 6
Elizabeth Fettes 4
William Fettes 2
Jessie Fettes 5 Mo
Isabella Mackay 49
Helen Sanderson 48
Jane Boath 11 occ: domestic servant
& again in 1851:
Forfar:
John Boath 35 b. Forfar occ: hand loom weaver ( linen )
( wife Sophia b.1819 ) missing in 1851 & reappears in 1841 & 61
Ann Boath 11
William Boath 10
Martha Boath 4
Jean Boath 2 b. Welton ( Jean & Jane were interchangeable ).
Jean/Jane is missing from this family in 1861 & is probably the one in service.
John Boath married Sophia Mitchell 13/10/1839 Forfar.
All of these places are around Forfar.
This could be James in 1851 Forfar
William Duthie 47
Ann Duthie 30
Mary Duthie 9
Janet Duthie 7
David Duthie 5
James Duthie 1
1871 Forfar
William Duthie 65
Ann Duthie 49
Janet Camic (Nee. Duthie) 27
James Duthie 21
Ann Duthie 18
William Duthie 16
John Duthie 12
John Forsyth 8
This is his parents marriage according to the children's Baptisms:
William Duthie = Ann McMillan 16/5/1841 Forfar.

Jim1, Wow that was quick. :)
The family listed in the 1881 census has all the right names, (Alexander would be my G Grandfather). I have been lucky enough to find a photograph of Alexander, his wife Abigail (nee Francis) and their two sons from around 1910ish.
The Boath family, John and Sophia are from what I can see are Janes parents. Wow, Jane out in the work force and so young, hard times back then... :(
For the parents of James, I have William Duthie b1819 and Isabel Burns b1818 ? I may be on the wrong track? I will revisit my info.
Many thanks for your work, I will check out the Scotland's People site.
Of a side note, a family rumour has it that there is a family link to the famous opera singer from the late 19th/early 20th century Dame Nellie Melba (Helen Porter Mitchell). The link, from what I can make out is through Janes mother Sophia Mitchell, perhaps her brother was Dame Nellies father?? This will take some more digging... all part of the fun.. :)
Cheers, Glenn

You might not be. This is why you need James' marriage cert.
I did consider that family but their James married a Margaret & is still around in 1891.
The problem with Sophia Mitchell is that there's no Baptism for her that I can see.
There's an offchance she was married before & Mitchell is her married name or she was Baptised under another first name.
She says she was born 1819 in either Blair Atholl or Blairgowrie Perth.
The only Sophia Baptised is Sophia Robertson b. 1821 Blair Atholl, parents:Duncan Robertson & Sophia Stewart.
The only female Mitchell I can find in either of those places is Mary Mitchell B. 1820, parents: William Mitchell & Mary Campbell.
You can download John & Sophia's bann/marriage entry but it won't give as much detail as post 1855 marriages as Civil Registration didn't start until then.
I think Dame Nellie's ancestry goes something like this:
F. David b.1829
G/parents: William Mitchell b. 1788 Alyth & Ann Fraser b. C.1805 Coupar Angus (m. 1824 Airlie [ 6mls. from Alyth])
GG/parents : David Mitchell & Betty Colville.
Make of it what you will.
Let us know how you get on.
