There is a death registration in the Luton RD for a William A Bedford aged 86 in June 1942 - is that him as you don't mention a middle name

That sounds correct, I do not know his middle name, he was my Grandparents lodger who moved down South with them from Wigan in his 80's. My lDad remembers him dying during the war. dad is now 80 & wants to find out where he is buried.

You could contact the Beds & Luton Archives for a look up as they hold the Crawley Green Road cemetery grave records up to/including 1942....
