My mum used to tell me that my gran used to stick the fish knives in the ground in their garden, I think after fish on a Friday ? Anyone heard of this before?

Never heard of that one before... heard of the fish every Friday if you were R C :)

Yes when I was little my grandmother used to do it to get rid of the fishy smell on the knives also the forks, this was before the days of detergents when washing up was done with soap and elbow grease. Not very hygienic but it seemed to work. ::) ::)

Anyone who has been camping knows that plunging cutlery in the ground is an easy way to clean it, also using soil as a scourer for your pots and pans. So I guess that with hot water at a premium and modern day detergents not yet available such a method would have been common.
