I am looking for any information on a Patrick Horgan who married Catherine McDermoth (or McDermott) in St. Peter & Pauls Church Cork in June 1879. I think this may be the same Patrick that was born in June 1859 to John Horgan and Mary Horgan (nee Leahy). Patrick was the brother of my Granfather Francis Horgan born in Cork around 1886. They had a brother named Daniel that emigrated to London. According to my Granfather's Army Records Patrick emigrated to the U.S.A. but I do not have a date as to when he went. Neither can I find any Baptismal records in Cork for any Children born to Patrick and Catherine.

Thank you for replying to my post shellyesq. This john Horgan looks very promising. How would you advice my to proceed.

I think that John may be the son of the couple that merjones found. You can see the 1900 census here - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSKZ-CY5 It lists John's date of birth as Dec. 1887, which looks off by a year which is not uncommon. A WWI draft card seems to fit the date of birth on the birth record - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KXY3-GTK
Children James, Catherine, and Grace appear to be with widowed mother Catherine in Manhattan in the 1910 census. The New York City death index at www.italiangen.org has two deaths of Patrick Horgans between 1900 and 1910 that may fit his age.

Hi Shellesq, According to Church Records in St. Peter & pauls Cork Ireland patrick was born in 1859 and Baptised two days later. I have found a Marriage for a Patrick Horgan in St. Peter & Pauls Church to a Catherine McDermot in June 1879 this may or may not be the same Patrick Horgan. According to your records Patrick emigrated in 1874 which would have made him only 15 years old this to me would seem unlikely. 15 years seems a bit young to emigrate alone.
-
I wouldn't put 100% stock in the immigration date, because memories fade and he may not have been the one to give the information anyway. My husband has ancestors who gave a different year of immigration for every census.
Also, people did immigrate young in those days, so I don't think 15 wouldn't have been out of the question.
Hopefully, we can rule in or out this Patrick one way or another.
Do the Army records that said Patrick went to the US have any further detail?

Hi Shellyesq,
Would love if this was My Patrick but I suppose I will never know for sure. What I do know is that Patrick was born in Cork Ireland to John Horgan and Mary Horgan (nee Leahy) in June 1859. In the 1911 Census Mary has 3 living children the youngest being my Granfather Francis. This I think is sad as Mary and John had 14 children born alive and so they must have buried 11 children. In the 1901 census Mary is living with her son Francis and there is no mention of any other family members. All it says in my Granfathers Army Records is that Patrick was in the" U.S America" and Daniel was in London. So it's only a few years ago that I realised these people even existed. Since then I have made a few attempts to try and discove where exactly they went to. I suppose my chances of ever tracing them are slim to nil. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.

A death record may list his parents' names, so you could try ordering the possible death certificates I mentioned above to see if either is a match. You may be able to use the Family History Library's photoduplication services - https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Photoduplication_Services

It would be wonderful if a death record did list the parents names. Will give it a try.

Hi,
I came across this forum while I was researching my great-grandmother (Grace Rita Neyland nee Horgan). I believe she is the daughter of Patrick Horgan/Catherine McDermot you are referring to from Cork, Ireland. Grace Rita was born November 29, 1897 in NYC.
I would love to talk further about our family.

Hi to you,
Delighted you made contact. What a lovely surprise. This is what I have regarding my Patrick Horgan. He was born in Cork, Ireland on 11/06/1859. Baptised in St. Peter and Pauls Church, Cork on 12/06/1859. I have a Marriage for a Patrick Horgan ( not absolutely certain this is the same man) and Catherine McDermott in St. Peter and Pauls Church, Cork on 14/06/1879.
All this comes as a result of a line on my Grand Father Francis Horgan's army records which states in a family section that he had a brother named Patrick in USA. This would have been about 1914. So if these two are brothers, Patrick emigrated to the USA between 1879 and 1914. As my Grand Father was the youngest of the family and was deceased long before I was born I don't have anything handed down as word of mouth and don't have any information on Patrick after he reached the USA.
Hope this may be of some assistance to you and if so can fill you in on some further details.
Best Wishes.

Thank you for the quick response! It was a shot in the dark to message you, and I am so happy I did!
I confirmed the birthday date and it matches my Patrick's (2nd great-grandfather). The story I was always told of how our family emigrated from Cork, Ireland to New York City was nothing short of an Irish folk tale. My great-grandmother was known for her story-telling, but I've always believed the story that was passed down.
I am visiting my father this week and I promise I will give you as much information as possible. I am going to show him all of the information covered in this thread and he'll be able to confirm and add additional information.
Sincerely,
Erica

I did this Search on https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/advanced.jsp which has quite a few R.C. Registers for Cork... there are about 8 Baptisms for the children.
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/church-records/about/what-church-records-are-available-online explains Counties, Parishes they have etc.
After doing the Search I clicked on Cork folder. I didn't enter parish because they might have moved. one can even just use the 2 Surnames of Parents if known. Any missing ones might be in another parish as not all are there, or born elsewhere!
I didn't click on Kerry ones!
If you need children of another couple just amend Search to their Surnames, no need to fill many boxes!

Thank you Hallmark for that information.
