Hi I am new to the forum, have been perusing for a couple of weeks reading posts and finding useful tips ect. Now I would like some help if possible finding information on my Great Granddad. I have found a number of things related to him but now I am stuck. Here's what I know about him
his name was John Britton, born 1846/47. He married Sarah Anne Warburton in 1864 in Bolton Lancashire. I found them in the 1871 Census under the name Briston and it says he was born in Bolton. He died in 1888 and she remarried in 1889. They had five children who's names all spelt Briton. Samuel 1869-   Sarah 1871-1872  John 1873-  Sarah Jane 1875-1911 and my Granddad James 1883-1942. All born in Bolton Lancashire. What I can't find is the family in 1881 or my Great Granddads birth or parents. The only ref to his birth is the 1871 census which says Bolton. Help finding his birth or the family in 1881 would be much appreciated.

				Hi,

 Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

A copy of John's marriage certificate should show the name and occupation of his father, which will help you find him in earlier census records.  Not all births were registered in the early years but you might find a baptism.

Copies of certificates can be ordered online from GRO and cost £9.25; usually arrive in 5-7 days.

 Kattak,

Your family - John and Sarah A  are living in Lever Street in 1871 which looks promising.
