I have some verified information on my GGrandmother Sophie Cowan (nee Duffy)
1. Marriage cert 1879 to James Cowan (her father is Michael Duffy, occ. gardener)
2. Baptism details for her children list sponsors as Mary Anne, Catherine and Bridget Duffy (possibly sisters?).
3. 1901 census has Sophie and family living in upper Buckingham street. Her widowed sister Catherine Meehan and son are living with them. Both sisters say they were born in Co. Dublin
4. Catherine Meehan (nee Duffy)s 1885 wedding certificate has her father as Michael Duffy, occ. gardener.
5. Death cert for Sophie Cowan 1903 age 45. Informant Mary anne, daughter. She was supposed to be 45 in the 1901 census too so I hope this is the correct person.
This is where things started to get a bit difficult ::) I looked on RootsIreland for a Sophie Duffy born 1856-8. Only 1 match came up within 5 years either side of her possible birth year. The parish was Clontarf. The father was Michael and the mother was Catherine monaher. RootsIreland had 3 baptisms with the same father's name and the same or similar mother's name in the same parish. Mary Anne 1853, Bridget 1854 and Richard Joseph 1859. I couldn't find Catherine.
I thought if I could find a marriage for one of Sophie's other possible siblings with the same father's name and occupation it would help me confirm that I was nearer to confirming I had the right people and therefore I could be sure about Catherine Monaher as the mother. Unfortunately, the only marriage certificate I could find was for Richard Duffy to Bridget Conlon 1884. On the certificate Richard's father is Michael but he is a shoemaker not a gardener.
I'm hoping that someone can look at the information with fresh eyes and either tell me that I have been following the wrong family (I hope not) or point me in the right direction to find more of Sophie's siblings or their father Michael.

Did Sophia or Catherine marry in a RC church? If so, have you checked that their mother’s maiden name was not recorded in the church registers?
Was Catherine’s husband’s name John? If so, see url for 1892 baptism for Anne Meehan, d/o John Meehan and Catherine Duffy – Sponsors Richard Duffy and Mary Anne Hilforty. http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/0deb690261700
And marriage, possibly for Sophia’s sister, Mary Anne Duffy, Dublin North, Oct – Dec 1883, vol 2 / page 429. James Hilfirty cross-matches.

Hi Mollymoo19,
Thank you for your reply. Catherine was married in an RC church in Rathmines and Sophie was married in RC chapel of Fairview. Tomorrow morning I will look on RootsIreland to see if they have those records. I will also send for the wedding cert of Mary Ann Duffy.
Yes, Catherine's husband was John and I know from the 1901 census that she had a son called Richard but didn't know about Ann.
Thanks again, your post has been very helpful and will hopefully lead to me finding more info :)

Thank you ourgang,
Sorry I've taken so long to reply but I am without internet at the moment >:( so I've had to visit my sister to use hers.
I've got all Sophie's children from irish genealogy ie and the marriage of Catherine Monaher to Michael Duffy but until I can verify that these are the correct parents of Sophie I will have to keep this information to one side.
Once I've got my internet back I will order the marriage certificate Mollymoo19 suggested and see if that helps.
Thanks you for your help

Hi Mollymoo19 and ourgang. Thanks to your advice I've come much nearer to verifying all my Duffy facts. I sent off for the Mary Anne Duffy/James Hilfirty marriage record which arrived today. It confirms her father's name and occupation (Michael Duffy, Gardener) and the reason I could find no church record was that they married by licence in the District Registry Office.
Thank you both again. When I get a bit more spare time I will email or write to the church my great grandmother was married in. If I find any more information I will keep you updated

That is great news. Every piece of information is a victory. Continued success with the search.
