Was't she summit to do with Bellevue Zoo amusements and is Barry's the amusement place at Portrush - could she be something to do with that too?
saz :-*

Hi Saz
I wish I had thought of that. ::)
I remember Barry's Amusements well. They used to travel all over NI. Many a time I had a ride on the chairoplanes - which scared me to death ;D
Regards
Darcy

I wonder if she was she part of a travelling amusement business or were different members of the Barry family responsible for various static amusement arcades? Is there not a Barry's Amusements in South Wales too?
I have tried "googling" but without success!
Perhaps there is a NI resident might remember a bit more about the Barry family.
Hi Darcey
My Portrush memories are more recent - one sister, who will remain nameless, reassured me the ride only went round and round. However, once on it I discovered it also went upside down and inside out!!! I am still trying to get my "sea legs"back today - three years later!!! Moral of the story being - SISTERS TELL FIBS!!! (I love her really xx)
saz ;D
-
My Dear Niece Saz :-*,
You might Google a bit better if you had your sea legs. It seems to me you were all at sea when doing your Googling. I had no trouble finding this site. You will note that Barry's Amusements was founded by Evelyn Chipperfield and Francesco Trufelli. The Lion Park at Dervock was owned by their daughter Louisa and Pat Stephenson.

Good Afternoon Steve,
Was there mention in the book of a family called Wallace?
I met a man by the surname of Wallace in Portrush during the mid 1970s.
He told me his family were connected with Barry's Amusements at Bellevue Zoo.
Best Wishes to you, Chris

Hiya Steve,
I came across more information about Pauline Barry when I was in the Central Library the other day searching for information about the Taggart family who built the Floral Hall at Bellevue. I was handed a book titled "Bellevue - Belfast's Mountain Playground. Things You Didn't Know or Had Forgotten" Author: Stewart McFetridge.
Pauline and her sister started a specialised dancing act in 1918 and toured the British Isles. She also worked as an accompaniest at the silent movies. Later she took part in a Wall of Death act both as a solo rider and also in a double act. Their father was E. Barry who for many years ran a funfair at the corner of Fisherwick Place and Grosvenor Road in Belfast.
I'll see if the Library have any newspaper cuttings about Pauline or other members of her family.
I'm not sure what their father's christian name may have been so I've looked at the Ulster Covenant 1912 for a few ideas. There's a possibility that he may not appear and he may not appear in the street directories as he could have been living in a showman's wagon on the fun fair site.
Edward Barry, 226, Neds Road, Belfast: South. (I'm certain this should be N'ards Road)
Edward Barry, 226, Newtownards Road. Belfast: South
I checked the 226, Newtownards Road address and found five people with the surname Barry ....
Edward, George, J, Samuel and William.

Thanks Chris
I must look out that book again to see what it was called.
Still unsure why our mother would have been interested in Pauline,or it maybe that she knew the family some how.
That would be lovely if you could find some newspaper cuttings
Thank you
Steve

Hiya Steve,
Can we rule out the possibility that your mother volunteered to do one lap in the Wall of Death as Pauline's passenger? I seem to recall seeing a Wall of Death a couple of times and hearing them asking for volunteers.
Chris
-
You can Chris
she was more than likely willing her off the wall of death ,so she could practice her St John Ambulance training... :P
My mother did her St John's at the Flora Hall...(what a fabulous architectural building ....) could that be the link?
Steve
-
It's just struck me that Wales may be the link, Steve.
I met a woman in South Wales almost twenty years ago who told me she was originally from Northern Ireland
and had been a member of a family of travelling entertainers. I omitted to get her name though although maybe
I asked and that's when she mentioned travelling entertainers. Offhand I can't think of too many Ulster families who would fit that description. She may have been one of Pauline's five sisters.
Chris
-
Wales.....definitely not a link Chris
We never knew it existed until I moved here...I thought I was going to another country ;D.
Think the" Flora Hall" is the link....our family never traveled further than the"Church" or ......."Halfway House"......... then ;D

"Ernest Barry" was the adopted name of my grandfather's brother. My grandfather was Richard Chipperfield (1875/1959), his brother was James Chipperfield (1872/1935). He took the name 'Barry' when he moved to Ireland.

i was denied barry's amusements when i was a child but i'm now making up for it with my own children :) they have tokens for the rides that they are saving until next summer and i can guarantee, come july, they will know exactly where to find them! it must be amazing knowing that you could walk up to anybody in northern ireland and talk about barry's and they'd know what you were talking about! and with a smile on their face :)

While doing some on-line research into my family, I came across this "chat" about Pauline Barry (better late than never). As with Tish - she is my Great Aunt also ... and Tish and I are actually second cousins (we have met a couple of times, but she likely does not remember) - my grandmother (Minnie) and her grandmother (Evelyn) were sisters. The Ireland Chipperfield girls were: Louisa (named after her mother), Minnie, Lily, Evelyn, Pauline, and the only son Jim. Louisa & Lily died of TB in their early 20's and had no surviving children; Jim also died of TB at about 40 years of age. I had the good fortune of spending summers in Northern Ireland in my teens (1970's), lived with my grandparents, and spent some time with Auntie Pauline up at Bellevue. I also recall meeting my Great Grandmother - Lousia Chipperfield (born c1876) - when I was very young. For anyone interested, the book that was suggested "Fun is our Business - the story of Barry's Amusements" by James Fairely is a great resource document. As part of his research, the author spent a week with me here in Canada doing interviews, going through family records, etc. FYI I believe that the name "Barry" was adopted for the family business for the simple reason that it was on the first truck that James (sometimes referred to as Ernest) Chipperfield bought when he brought his family from England and started up the business in Ireland ... didn't want to spend the money to repaint it!
Regarding meeting one of the sisters in Wales about 20 years ago - it is unlikely, given Auntie Pauline died around 1995, my grandmother (Minnie) about 6 years earlier, and Tish's grandmother (Evelyn) - died many years before. Pauline Barry will always be special to me for a variety of reasons - one being that I am her namesake.

Thank you for taking the time to write such lovely account about your Great Auntie Pauline.
I have managed to read and find that she was a remarkable lady...she managed to do so much within a career that was a man's world.
You must be so proud

Hello, i hope someone is still researching the Barry family and might have some insights for me. Before he died, my dad told me that his half brother, James Hughes married Pauline Barry in 1940 just before he set sail in a merchant ship that was torpedoed off the coast of Donegal. My grandfather wasn't happy because it meant, Jimmy's pension went to his new wife. I've since found a document transferring Jimmy's property in Omagh into the name Minnie Hughes. I haven't found any record of a marriage to either sister. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks
