He married my Mam in Leicester in 1948 dont know when he came to Leicester and have no idea what regiment he would have been in. He died in 1978. We did have 1 pic of him in a group shot my sister said it's in Burma. Is it possible to obtain them on line. Thanks for any help. :)

My parents married in 1942 and there was no army number on the certificate.

Unlikely.  You can request his service record from the MOD https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records.  Cost £30 and wait a year for his record to arrive.

No.  Just his name and date of birth will do.

Hi Graham,

My dad joined the war in 1939 and married shortly after he joined.  His marriage certificate gives his service number, what he did in the war and also lists Plumber, his occupation prior to joining up.

My dad also married shortly after he signed-up in 1940 but the marriage cert. only says he was a window cleaner.

If your Mum is still alive she can apply and it's free.  My parents records came back quickly as I explained that my mother was in poor health (early stages of dementia) and I would like to be able to talk with her about them.

 Hi Dee

I was also using the link you showed until I recently spotted someone referring to millymcb's excellent post  :)

I don't know whether katy p has done anything about it though.

Hi, i tried Vetrans u.k. and did get redirected to Gov . site. I did read millymcb's post, very informative. I also tried the British Legion someone would get the info for me for £95 in three months but can't guarantee it.So it looks like my only option is to go for it myself and wait. Does anyone think Ancestry would have the info? thanks again.Katyp :)

Do Not apply for Service Records other than through the MOD at Manning and Records in Glasgow. There are a few websites claiming, suggesting, hinting etc that they have them or can get them quicker for money....Lies, lies and dam lies.

Only apply through the Government website and pay no more than £30.

Good luck
