Looking through my records I've seen that in about 1810 Robert Cook, miller, was going bust.
Ten years later, in 1820, John Cook was going the same way.
Both were millers at Oakley Mill (or Mills) in north Suffolk.
Does anyone know what their relationship was? I assume father and son, but may its something more distant?
Cheers,
Windy

Could have been brothers born in 1778 and 1787 to parents Robert and Catharine. Take a look at familysearch for Cooks in Oakley.

Thanks Craclyn,
That looks promising.

Google just led me here...
I've just found an estate sale at the Oakley mill, by Robert Cook, run by Wm Blomfield.
15 September 1810 - The Ipswich Journal - Ipswich, Suffolk, England, page 3, 4th column.
I am currently chasing "Harriet Cook", who married William Smith of the Dickleburgh Mills in 1810.

Given that Robert was a miller, I'm suspecting he might have been Harriet's father.
And hints of the Cook family gratefully receieved.

Careful does it - there's a WILLIAM cook at the adjacent Hoxne water mill.

Doesn't look good for Robert b1778;

Christening Date 12 Apr 1778

Burial Date 15 Apr 1778
I don't think he was around in 1810. :'(

In reply to the OP.
I have spent some time chasing the Cook family of Oakley. Given that the Oakley parish record aren't on line this is harder than I'd like.
However, combining the British Newspaper archive, the census, and some data from family search...
I have a family for Robert Cook and Wife Catherine, all born in Oakley.
There is a Birth of a John Cook to Robert/Cath in 1787, and John Cook (conveniently) marries a Phebe (nice distinctive name...) who lived until at least 1861, and shows in 3 Census, enough to give a convincing birth date.
I am as certain as I can be that John Cook is the Son of Robert Cook, both Millers of Oakley.
I (sadly) am looking for Harriet Cook, probably John's Sister.

Oh, that's most helpful :)
My primary source so far has been this carefully formulated search (https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=75&query=%2Bsurname%3Acook~%20%2Bbirth_place%3Asuffolk~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1730-1820~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3Arobert~%20%2Bfather_surname%3Acook*%20%2Bmother_givenname%3A*ath*) on family search.
But Harriet is missing...
It also gives a slightly different date for John's Christening;
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NYSM-83P
But (thanks to you) I have a good "origin" for Harriet, my Ancestor.

I sure you have all the data you need on Robert & John Cook. They were indeed father & son and both millers at Oakley. Robert appears to have found himself in financial difficulties in 1810 and John likewise in 1820-21. You should be able to find some refs in the London Gazette's online archive). Robert died in 1823 and the obit mentions he was miller at Oakley and then, interestingly, at Dickleburgh (Bury & Norwich Post, 1823/02/19).
The connection with Edward Bullock seems to be more that Edward was a significant creditor (as Robert assigned all his assets over to Edward).
Another daughter of Robert, Matilda, married a John Clark of Newmarket in December 1808.
My own interested is in the milling side so if any one can point to any evidence of when Robert Cook started milling at Oakley (or any milling data pre-1810) I'd be very grateful!!!
Cheers,

John Cook (and wife Phebe) has occupation "Independent" (means, I presume) in 1851, and "Miller" in 1861, by which time he is 75 and Phebe is 83.
Sounds like he came out of his bankruptcy surprisingly well!

Hi Bugbear, I have just stumbled on this post - I too am descended from the Smiths of Dickleburgh (my ancestor was Mary Smith - sister of your Emma Smith). Their father, grandfather and great grandfather were all William Smiths. I realise that I am a few years late on this post but thought it would be good to make contact!
