Hello ,
This photo was found with my Grandmothers old photos...she was born in 1915 .On the back of the photo is written 'Mam aged 4' .If this is her on the picture this would date this about 1919...would the clothing match this timeline .Her own mother was born in 1884 so the other option would be 1888 but the clothes look later than this. The only thing is that the adults in the picture look nothing like my Grandmothers parents ...I have added a photo of these people too .Thanks for any advice!

My grandmothers parents.

I have a similar photo of a child in similar clothing and she was born in 1917 so this could well be your grandmother . in your photo the adults look to be in their 20's. the other photo could be them later on ?
-
Kids are hard to date, but the woman's v-neck blouse style didn't start until 1913/14 so this would be just about right for 1919.
Cheers,

Thanks this confirms this is may well be my grandmother ..I am just not convinced the parents look right. Its hard to tell with the woman as the photo is damaged and the only photo I have of them is the one later in life .

Hello Fred
To me they do look like the same people - especially your Great-Grandma - it's the way she holds her head. In both photos the man appears to have large hands. See what others think. ::)
-
Yes I think they are the same couple too about 20 years apart.

If you can rescan it at a higher resolution ( 300dpi) we will have a go at restoring it ;D

My other query about this photo is this ....My Grandmother had siblings born 1904 ,1906,1911 and 1918 ..Is it not unusual to have just one child on the photo ? Her father was just a coal miner .Would it not have been expensive to have photos done ?

My brother and I were about 7 and 8 years old when we arrived home from school one day and almost immediately spied an envelope on the mantlepiece. It was most unusual to have post in those days. Inside was a photograph of our mother with our 4 year old brother and not only had they had their photograph taken, but they'd been to the seaside without us as well! Although we older siblings had had ours taken a few years earlier, this was the first photo taken of our youngest sibling.
Maybe the parents had gone into town for a specific purpose and decided on a whim to have their photograph taken.

Thanks for that thought Rena .
I notice on the lapel of the jacket there is a badge ...Is this familiar to anyone ?
-
Could it be a Silver War Badge? It might be worth looking for a Military Record for him as this is just after the Great War.

Thanks Carol.... i think this information has solved the puzzle to confirm it is my great grandad :D :D :D .I have googled the Silver war badge and it said it was given to service personnel who had been honourably discharged due to wounds or sickness during World War I. like you said this prompted me to re look at his army record .... which confirmed he had brown hair and brown eyes but also that he was discharged in 1919 (when we are guessing the photo was taken ) ...his left shoulder was shattered and when you look at the photo his left arm is discretely hidden by my Grandma ...also it might explain why the special occasion of just my grandma on the photo and not the other children as he may have hardly seen her if he was away at war
-
Great stuff...If you look at his left shoulder in the second photo it appears to be positioned slightly lower than the right one.
