Title: Saltley Reformatory/renamed Norton Boys Home 1911
Post by: blonders on Thursday 05 June 14 07:16 BST (UK)
I am hoping someone is able to find why my grandfather was admitted to this boys home.
The 1911 census shows him as an inmate at age 15yo.
His name is John William Ackroyd born May 8th 1895 at Rotherham Yorkshire.
On the census under the column "Nationality " etc. there is a number in red - 037.
Thank you for any help in advance-(sometimes I am unable to get online soon after posting)...so apologies if I am slow in responding.  :-\
Once again thank you ....  :)

Is it possible he was orphaned?

There is a family tree with a death for his mother Sarah in 1910 but his father seems to be around.

Think he might have done something naughty  boys were sent there if they had committed a crime... thought he might have been orphaned as mother died Oct--Dec 1910 aged 50 in Rotherham Yorkshire but his father was still living ...If you google the name of both schools it will tell you a bit about it  :)

Thanks for your replies, I do have those details you have mentioned.
It puzzles me why he was there as I assumed he committed some sort of offense.
He does have 5 siblings i know of and his father was still living and tentatively I think his father had a maid though that needs further investigating.
I do know he went to the States via Canada....and he deserted a wife and young child in Yorkshire.
He did die in the States - San Francisco 1967, and my mother was one of 2 children he had in his 2nd marriage there.
I have a fair amount of info and documents but this is one of my stumbling blocks. He was a POW in Schneidemuhl Camp in Germany now Poland ( i have a couple of documents,a photo and a postcard to support this)after the School and before going to Canada.
I know of the football career ( I have a team photo) also and he also was in the Canadian Legion in San Francisco.
I decided to post on here as I am stumped on where else to find the info for his admission to this School. I do have a fair amount of general info about Saltley ( and others places like this)though.
I also know about the Bank of Montreal...Mum had an excellent memory and many documents about her father which i now have. There's just chunks of his life I have had to un-bury that she did not know of..
Thanks for your replies...

If you google the school you get some previous posts - from here - where someone has copied admission records for certain boys.  Would be wonderful if they had one for yours  :)
With luck they will see this topic and can help with information.  Fingers crossed.

Here is a link to the previous post.  Hope I am allowed to do that.

Sadly, the admissions registers for Saltley Reformatory for the period 1902-1916 are missing from the archives. Newspaper reports offer the most likely alternative source of information. However, those that are accessible online are by no means comprehensive either in geographical coverage or of available dates. I've had a search through the British National Archive but with no luck. Sheffield and Leeds papers are available there, but not, as yet, any Rotherham ones, and coverage after 1900 falls off rapidly anyway. Sorry not to be able to help.

Looks like some of the records from 1855 to 1857 have been sold last year.

I wonder if Warwickshire Council Records have any information?
http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/yourcareinformation (http://www.warwickshire.gov.uk/yourcareinformation) (scroll down to can I see my records)

I had a similar situation myself and I wanted to see some records of my family from the 1920's (different area). I wrote giving all the information I could to back up my connection and asked some questions. They wrote giving me some information, dates admitted/released, next of kin, addresses etc May be worth a letter :)
