Helping my sister-in-law track down her gggrandma Susannah EASON.b.c. 1830 Guernsey
In 1841 in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales & FP with Wm. MARTIN bc 1816, his wife Mary b.c. 1795 - 1806 Donegal, Ireland & their 2 dtrs. [b. Cornwall] + Anne EASON b.c. 1821 Ireland & James EASON b.c. 1832 FP [also Guernsey].
Family moved to Penzance, Cornwall where Susannah m. 1850 John HOSKING.
Theory: Mary MARTIN much older than Wm. so was she previously mar. to Mr. EASON in Ireland , had Anne there, then moved to Cornwall or Guernsey & had Susannah & James? [can't find m. or b/ch in Ireland].
In 1851 James is recorded as Wm's son-in-law but was unm. so was he really his stepson?
Need anything earlier than 1841 please. Any help appreciated. Peggy in SA

Thanks very much Trish. With Mary MARTIN as a witness it certainly seems to indicate this is
Susannah's sister, so now I have their father. His occupation of soldier may explain the varying locations for the childrens' births.
I didn't want to go to the expense of another certificate [Susannah's marriage in 1850] so this has helped a lot.

Hi Peggy,
I suggest you do a look-up on the Alderney, Guernsey, Jersey, Sark Board to see if someone has access to Baptisms to see if there is one for James Eason c 1832 and a Marriage for William Martin to Mary Eason c 1834/6.
You never know what the info may contain if someone has them.
Trish :)

You could also look at The Island Wiki? (http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Main_Page)
And in particular, the Donkipedia pages (http://www.theislandwiki.org/index.php/Family_History_in_Guernsey)
-
Tried Donkeypedia without success, but that led me to a Guernsey family history facebook page so maybe someone there can help.
Thank you for your suggestions.

Possibly the right Jethro Eason?
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/SearchUI/details/C8795858?descriptiontype=Full&ref=WO+97/907/76
His mother may have been a Susanna: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/J957-CQX

I think this is the one, although I have yet to prove the connection. From the marriage record of Eliza [presumed sister of Susannah], father Jethro was a soldier so this is a positive identifier.
I've found a whole family of EASONs in Merriott, Somerset [not Merioneth as in the National Archives record]. Jethro was bap.6.3.1791, 3rd of 7 children of Jethro EASON [snr] and Susannah MITCHELL.
If I could just find the marriage between Jethro EASON and Mary ...?.. [later MARTIN] that would be a clincher. Mary was from Donegal, Ireland so it may well have happened there, especially as the eldest 2 daughters {Ann abt. 1821 & Eliza abt. 1824]were born in Ireland, then Susannah & James were born in Guernsey several years later. I'll have to try to find the postings of the regiment in which Jethro served. Thank you for your help - much appreciated. Peggy

I had come to the same conclusion that Jethro was likely the Somerset one but was waiting for your reply. Well done KG for finding him in the National Archives.
The Birth Cert of Ann/Anne Martin will hopefully give you Marys maiden name :)
-
Connection made, yippee...! - the 81st Regiment of Foot was in Ireland at the relevant time and also the Channel Islands.
If Jethro, aged 40, left the army in 1832, what would he do? He doesn't seem to have returned to the UK as I can't find him in censuses.
Maybe he died leaving Mary free to marry William MARTIN [if they did actually marry]and produce their first daughter Mary MARTIN abt. 1836 in Cornwall.
I think it's his father Jethro senior's death in Somerset in 1845 [but no age given in the GRO]. Findmypast has 2 deaths listed in their index for that year for Jethro EASON - and I assumed it to be a duplication.
Now I just have to find the marriage of Jethro and Mary. Plod on... Cheerio, Peggy

Try FreeREG for the Marriage of Jethro Jnrs Parents 1788.
Childrens Baptisms are there 1788-1807
Jethro Snr Baptism 1765 and his Burial 1845 with age + Susanna 1838.
Marriage of Jethro Snrs Parents 1759
Jethro Jnr must have died 1832-1836ish .
-
Thanks Trish - I have Jethro snr's marriage & baptism + bap.& burial of his wife Susannah MITCHELL + all their children. Haven't got the nitty gritty details of his burial so will go after that. I'd really like to find Jnr's burial with age [to put icing on the cake], but mostly want Jnr's & Mary's marriage. Will go back & trek through all the Irish sites again.

I think it is likely they married in Ireland so an almost impossible task unless you get Ann Martins Birth Cert to establish her maiden name

Jethro's 1832 discharge from the Army was due to ill health, so he may well have died shortly afterwards and not necessarily in England. He had been suffering from weakness of chest and general debility after a first attack of haemoptysis in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1825, with further frequent attacks of haemoptysis thereafter.
The discharge hearing took place in Templemore, Ireland and Jethro was medically examined in Dublin on 17 Dec 1832.
The wives and children may have been based in Ireland or at the Guernsey garrison whilst the regiment was engaged overseas. One would not expect Jethro's family to have stayed in Guernsey after the 1832 discharge.
The 1845 death of a Jethro Eason corresponds to a burial in Merriott, Somerset on 17 May 1845 aged 79, so presumably the soldier's father.
-
Wow, where did you get the information about Jethro's health please?
A friend has just sent me a .jpg file of his military record/discharge document, but there were no details re health, just sign on/discharge dates & length of service.
I wonder why his widow Mary ended up in Cornwall. She and William MARTIN moved to South Wales before 1841, but returned to William 's home town of Penzance by 1850.
Thanks again to everyone who is helping with this. Peggy

Does the file you have received go beyond page 1?

Lots here on the Easons of Merriott:

What a useful site, thanks very much. I now have a picture of the EASON clan back to the late 1600s.
I have tried all the [free indices] sites I know for Ireland for Jethro & Mary's marriage, but no success. I'm trying to avoid the expense of more certificatesbuying credits, but may have to go down that track if my sister in law is really keen to pursue that line. I would, but I'm a fanatic, and I think she just has a mild interest.
Thanks again folks.

Message for Welshlass......re Jethro Eason the soldier. His oldest brother was also a soldier killed in the Peninsular war. I am descended from Jethro's older sister Ann who married into the Trask family. Although I have a good deal of info on the Eason family I know virtually nothing about Jethro junior and would be interested to learn if you have any further info.

Hi John,
the EASONs are ancestors of my brother's wife not mine, but I'll be happy to share the research I've done for her, and would love to have your family history to share with her.
Contact me on (*) and I can send you the info as an attachment.

Hello Peggy,
Many thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately the site moderator has deleted your email address as it's apparently not their policy to allow access. There is a Personal Message service but I'm not allowed to use it as a new member until I've had more posts.
I'm at a loss as to how to proceed. My tree including the Eason lines are on GenesReunited which I would be happy to share but is your sister-in-law a member?
Alternatively if you could let me have an address I would be very happy to send a note of my email address. Or do you have any other ideas?
Sorry to be a nuisance.
John B

John - sorry to butt in, but the threshold for using the PM system is only 3 posts. You currently have 2 posts to your name, so if you just post once more in response to this it will be available to you. :)

To AVM228 Many thanks for that....hopefully this reply will qualify me!

To AVM228...Having looked at the PM system it doesn't allow you to send email addresses or attachments......how do I share trees/research etc with a coorespondent?
John B

You can't send attachments via PM, but you sure can type an email address!
I've done it lots of times! ;D
Type it in the body of the message: e.g. mickey.mouse@disney.com

Many thanks
