Hi

Here's the reference from Family Search

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/2DD1-BQ6

Do you know which church they married in?

I can't find him and Rosa together on a census to find his age or birthplace  :-\

There's a John Henry born Portsea 1862 that's the closest I can get.

Added - No not him, he is with wife Alice in 1891.

Changing tack do you know anything about Rosa - have you got her later in life?

There's a John Layton lodger in Lancashire shoemaker in 1891.  Married but no wife listed.  He's from Yorkshire long way from Devon.

For those who can help;
Rosa J Layton, born c 1871 Bideford, Devon, is in Wales in 1891. Presume it is her Son Sidney J born c 1890 Bideford (mistranscribed)
RG12/4374/29/4

EDIT, 1910 they are back in Bideford, Sidney J Layton is born c 1889 Bideford
Possible Marriage 1904 for Rosa

Ah that's a good clue  :)

And in 1901 just her and Sidney together in Bideford.  Married but no husband.

There's a Rosa Jane Layton marriage in Dec 1904 Bideford.  Groom William Henry Shortridge.

So if all info she has given is correct John Henry should have died between 1901 and 1904.

If no one can find Sidneys Christening with Fathers Occp or the Marriage Record, I think you will have to buy some Certs.
He may have been a Seaman and or born Wales as Rosa is there in 1891.

Thank you  all so much,Yes thats the Rosa Jane Cox she is my husbands side of the family and the information I have is as follows Rosa Jane Cox  married John henry Layton October 1888, he was a master mariner on his sons marriage certificate, Rosa`s parents were Rueben cox and Elizabeth Parkin, I found rosa on the 1871 census with both her parents,Rueben died between 1871-1876 when she remarried Wiliam John Colenso,Elizabeth is a widow again by 1877. I found Rosa with her mother on the 1881 census along with her brothers,1891 census in Monmouthshire Wales I think  is Rosa with her Sidney born 5th October 1889 Bideford (I take it John was at sea then) by 1901 Rosa is back in Bideford with Sidney so John must have died between 1901 (after the census )as she is down as married up to 1904 when she marries William Henry Shortridge,I know Sidney her son didnt get on with Rosa`s new husband and as soon as he could he join the navy on the 1911 census Rosa does not acknowledge Sidney by declaring she had no children,Sidney finally settled in South shields Durham and married martha Tait I know Rosa was still alive in 1935 as she sent Sidney a random postcard, I cant find any information at all on John Henry Layton when he was born or when he died he doesnt show on any census with Rosa and there are a few John Layton`s on census records but I dont have any information on him to be able to say I have the correct one, would John have been from Northam the place he married or would it be some where else?

Quote
1911 census Rosa does not acknowledge Sidney by declaring she had no children

You are wrong on this. The census column is headed "Children born alive to present Marriage", so she would have been wrong to count Sidney.

There is a reference to John Henry Layton in the Western Daily Press of 30th January 1901, at the inquest in Bristol on two drowned sailors. The only sentence of interest is:

“The two men were last seen alive on the night of Saturday last, by a man named John Henry Layton, a Bideford seaman, of the ketch Ouse.”
