Title: McKechnie - Port Glasgow
Post by: mckechnie on Sunday 26 June 05 11:42 BST (UK)
I set out below information on the early generations of a McKechnie family that settled in Port Glasgow about 1860. The name, Robert, of the earliest member is speculative. Dates are all approximate, based on later Scottish census records or, for the earliest dates, guesswork. I do not think I have all the children and grandchildren of the earliest Robert? Any information, detail and corections would be welcome.

1. Robert (?) McKechnie b. 1790 (where?)
    m. ?
1.1 Robert McKechnie b. 1812 (where?)
      m. Mary Simpson
1.1.1 Robert McKechnie b. 1838 (Ireland)
         m. Elizabeth Clark
1.1.2 Fanny McKechnie b. 1840 (Ireland)
         m. Robert Anderson
1.2 James McKechnie b. 1815 (where?)
      m. Mary Logan
1.2.1 Robert McKechnie b. 1838 (Ireland)
         m. Agnes McMullan
1.2.2 Martha McKechnie b. 1841 (Ireland)
         m. Richard Boyle
1.2.3 James McKechnie b. 1844/5 (Ireland)
         m1 Elizabeth Rankin
         m2 Annie Anderson
1.2.4 Mary A. McKechnie b 1845/6 (Ireland)

I check the MI's for Renfrewshire vol 2.  There are many by that name in Paisley.  DO you think they went there?

Here is the only one I could find in Port Glasgow in for Port Glasgow Cemetery

Jas McKechnie blockmaker d 1835 w Jean JOHNSTON D 1874 (children) Duncan d infant, Walter d Hong Kong 1854, son Jas d Melbourne 1866, daughter Janet 1-1885, daughter Agnes 27-5-1889 (widow of Andrew Collins(, daughter Christina 17-10-1908 (widow of Alex McQUarrie), grandson Donald McQuarrie d infant, son in law Andrew McQuarrie d Liverpool 1858, Andrew Collins d Melbourne 1861

Thanks for your response.

What, may I ask, are MIs?

I do not think this particular family went to Paisley, though I too have noted many McKechnies in the Paisley records. I have tascked down whom each of the Irish born generation married and who their children were, all born in and around Port Glasgow. There may be other siblings of the Irish born generation I have not yet tracked down. I know nothing yet about their place of origin in Ireland. I have posted on the Antrim Rootschat site much of what I know about McKechnies in Ireland before 1860.

MI'S are monumental inscriptions from burial grounds.

Neither do I know these nmaes, I'm afraid.
I do not know where in Ireland my McKechnies came from -possibly Antrim; but if you have a look on the rootsweb site for Antrim you will see that I and others have listed as many references we can find to the name McKechnie in Ireland during the period you are looking at.
You may also want to confirm Irish birth first through the listing of birthplace in the Scottish census records. Usually Irish born people just record "ireland"; but sometimes you get lucky and a county is also given.

I have a Mary MCKECHNIE in my tree, born abt. 1844 in Ireland (birthplace given as Ireland on 1881 Census).

Mary married Thomas BARKER on 12 July 1864 in Slamannan, Stirlingshire, Scotland.

I would love to learn more about my great great grandmother.

Best Wishes,

Sarah,
What were her parents names? You should be able to find that on the certificate of her marriage to Thomas Barker. With that I might be able to tell you whether she links in to the parts of my family tree I know about.

Problem is I can't find Mary & Thomas' marriage on Scotland's People so I don't know Mary's parents names...

The Mary McKechnie in my family tree is Mary A. McKechnie, born about 1845 in Ireland. Her parents were James McKechnie and Mary Logan. She is recorded in the 1861 census for Port Glasgow; but after that I have no recored of her.

This seems to fit the details you have posted. What do you think?
