Title: Dublin canals
Post by: irishlassiefr on Tuesday 03 June 14 12:49 BST (UK)
My family ROACH worked on the Dublin canals during the 1800's and they lived around the Rathmine area. Is there anyway I can find out about them ?
Many thanks

Could be a difficult one. The canals and railway companies have an interwoven history in Ireland. When the railways amalgamated into Coras Iompair Eireann known as C.I.E in about 1950, the ownership of the canals moved to C.I.E.

I would say workers records are not available. However, if the Roach family were lock keepers there might be a better chance of records. Lock keepers occupied lock houses and files were kept for those houses.

Responsibility for canals passed in 1986 to (i think ) the office of Public Works then to Waterways Ireland.

National Archives Dublin hold the minute books belong to The Grand Canal Co from about 1780 till about 1950.
Most lock keepers are documented.

Hi there,
I have some relatives connected to the grand canal also, but further west. Clondalkin area.
haven't managed to do any research in that area yet, but I have been told that Waterways Ireland head office in Enniskillen may have Archives of some interest.
