Title: JAMES WOODMAN bapt. 14/2/1796 died 12/12/1825 .
Post by: emaline on Monday 02 June 14 17:05 BST (UK)
I have JAMES WOODMAN  who lived Harmondsworth, Uxbridge  who married OLIVE ???.   I cannot find any record of their marriage and it has been suggested that not all churches have allowed their Records to be online, or it may be that the marriage was out of the County  wherever Olive?? was born, if she was born out of the County.  I would really like to find the answer of their marriage to this poser which would give me her maiden name.

Olive WOODMAN was 35 yrs when she died Uxbridge  12/3/1828.  She had 3 daughters from 1819 onward who had all died by 1828. This left a remaining and only son Henry who survived and went on to marry.  Maybe put into an orphanage?

Thank you for that info Jennifer.  It bears out what I found out about Henry.  It must have been so hard for the young man to know he had lost not only his parents but his 3 sisters as well.   A pity that their death certificates are not available (before 1837)  or even a marriage certificate  for his parents.

That would solve a few problems but it is never that easy, is it.

How are you sure that the son of James and Olive is the same one who married Margaret Bray. Are you working back from known information?

Give what you are sure of and we can work back.

I will start from 1946 and work backwards. from Patricia's side of the family line only.

Patricia Mary CHARLTON born Hendon 12/11/1946.  Died Dacorum, Hemel Hempstead 12/11/1998.
Married name of Patricia Mary Fay.  The surname of LANGREAUX was left off. (Keith J) for family reasons.

Patricia was the daughter of Leslie CHARLTON born 9/11/1914  died Hemel Hempstead. Herts.  -/5/1998  and Annie Madge WOODMAN born 3/1/1917, Hendon, Oxfordshire.  died Dacorum, Hemel Hempstead. Dec. 1982.

Parents of Annie Madge were Henry James WOODMAN born -/5/1878 Uxbridge, Middx  and died June 1960, Hemel Hempstead.  Her mother was Annie Louisa IIOT  bapt. -/6/1884. Staines. Middx  and died -/9/1952. Harrow?

Parents of Henry James WOODMAN were William WOODMAN born about 1854 died Sept. 1927. Uxbridge.  Mother was Harriet BALL who married Henry James 28/6/1877.

William Woodman parents were Henry WOODMAN born 24/4/1825 died 1917.  Mother was Margaret Bray born 9/1/1831 died 8/4/1898.

Henrys parents were James WOODMAN  and Olive  who died in Uxbridge.

As you can see I have worked from the present time to back when James and Olive had the only surviving child, after their deaths who was  Henry.

I hope you can understand my set-up.

Henry seems to be surrounded by a lot of people for an orphan, and none of them have anything to do with being a Tailor!! Especially when he gave his fathers occupation as Labourer on his marriage certificate?

I have gone around in circles looking at  James (a tailor ???)  & Olive, If they married I can't find it.

It could be Henry living with John & Ann in 1841 census as they have another Henry aged 5 in 1851. 1841 does not show relationships so he could be a nephew?

Hello Jennifer.
You have come up with all the same answers as I have  that there seems to be no marriage for JAMES and OLIVE WOODMAN as the church St. Margaret, Harmondsworth, Uxbridge did only baptisms and burials back then. (do you know if there was a St, Marys Church there)

What do you think of this info.  Seeing that they named their first child Maria do you think Olive could have used a different christian name for some reason.  I have found a marriage for MARIA BURTON to JAMES WOODMAN 13/12/1819  at Old Church, St. Pancras Parish Chapel.

It could be likely but would mean they married after their first child in 23/5/1819 which is not unknown to happen to save embarrassment of having a child before the marriage.

I had noticed that James had been referred to as a Tailor which does seem out of keeping with the family traditional work.

A real enigma this has been.  The family always said they heard there was "something funny" about Henry but did not realise that he had been orphaned or that he had lost his 3 sisters as well.

You did find something more than I did that there had been twins in the family line.

Their first child was baptised at St Mary, Harmondsworth, they could have married there.  It is possible that the marriage is not online.  Maybe Olive lived in Harmondsworth before her marriage and returned to the parish from Uxbridge to have her first child christened.

Hello Rosie.  Your reply has helped me confirm that I am on the right track.  I am not sure that James and Olive married at St. Marys, Harmondsworth as I do not think it did marriages, only baptisms and burials.  Please correct me if I am wrong.  I have been swimming against the tide since trying to research this side of the family.  Most people find brickwalls but mine seems to be a mountain
