Title: This Parker family is driving me crazy!
Post by: nel gin on Wednesday 28 May 14 22:33 BST (UK)
Hi all,

This family might be playing a joke on us way ahead of its time.
Here we have John Parker and I'm looking for Annie Elizabeth who I eventually found as Ann E in the 1881 Census
Code: [Select]
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital condition Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
JOHN PARKER HEAD MARRIED Male 40 1841 LABOURER GRANTHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE
MARY PARKER WIFE MARRIED Female 34 1847 - CLAYPOLE, LINCOLNSHIRE
JOHN R PARKER SON SINGLE Male 8 1873 SCHOLAR SPITTLEGATE, LINCOLNSHIRE
LOUSIE PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 6 1875 SCHOLAR SPITTLEGATE, LINCOLNSHIRE
ANN E PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 0 1881 - GRANTHAM, LINCOLNSHIRE
BERNARD SHEERAN LODGER SINGLE Male 40 1841 - MITTINGAR, IRELAND

So, skip ahead 10 years later to see if the family are still there or have any more children...

Code: [Select]
First name(s) Last name Relationship to head Marital condition Gender Age Birth year Occupation Birth place
JOHN PARKER HEAD MARRIED Male 50 1841 GENERAL LABOURER LINCOLNSHIRE
JANE PARKER WIFE MARRIED Female 43 1848 - LINCOLNSHIRE CLAYPOLE
JOHN ROBT PARKER SON SINGLE Male 19 1872 GENERAL LABOURER LINCOLNSHIRE, GRANTHAM SPITTLEGATE
LOUISA PARKER DAUGHTER SINGLE Female 16 1875 CIGAR MAKER LINCOLNSHIRE, GRANTHAM SPITTLEGATE
ANNIE ELIZABETH PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 10 1881 SCHOLAR LINCOLNSHIRE
IDA ALICE PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 7 1884 SCHOLAR LINCOLNSHIRE
FLORENCE ROSE PARKER DAUGHTER - Female 2 1889 - LINCOLNSHIRE

So, let's joke about "mary jane" :) With that out the way, the wife's year is one year out, which is fine, we can account for that with the census date difference.

There's no doubt these are the same family, but is the mother/wife really different?

Of course, I cannot find a birth for a "Many Jane" anything around those dates. I'm not even sure how I'm going to figure this out.

Oh yes, according to the census they are at the same address at 16 Hands Yard. To complicate things a little, there's another Parker family that moved in to 11 Hands Yard between 1881 and 1891. I can't read the husband's name, but the wife's name...Jane!

I'd be happy to send census records to anyone who would be interested in looking into this and offering some insight.

Thanks,
Nigel

If you send for a copy of Annie Elizabeths birth cert (which I gather is the person of your interest) you will see who her mother is,  along with her maiden name. That will help you find John and her marriage,
which in turn will give you names of the fathers of John and his wife (Mary/Jane or Mary Jane!)
You will then be able to search for her in earlier censuses.

Just as an aside - Im not sure where you have copied those census clips from, but due to copyright issues details from censuses should be typed out in your own hand, not copied and pasted from other sites . I know yours arent copied and pasted, they are something much more up-market (!) but I think the same would apply.

Or . . .  might Mary have died and John married again between censuses?
 - and had more children with the second wife?

Is that a possibility?    :-\

A second wife that just happens to be from Claypole too?

Not impossible  - some people stuck pretty close to home - though of course I don't know how big Claypole is!

Anyhow, just a thought.    It happened, I know   :)

Today it has population of 1100 and is about 13 miles up the A1 from Grantham, not exactly commuting distance in those days lol. I'm pretty sure it's the same person but I'm not sure why the name change. I've not looked for them in the 1901 census yet which I'll do when I get by from an evening beer :)

This is something I considered but dismissing as unlikely in the absence of any sort of marriage record I can find to tie the two together separately.

1901

9 Hards Yard Grantham
John Parker 61 confirmed invalid bn Grantham
Jane 54 furrier bn Grantham
Annie 20 furrier
Ida 17 furrier
Rose 12
Arthur 5               all bn Grantham

If they are both still alive in 1911 it should give how many years they have been married. Sorry look ups arent alllowed.
Then you will have an idea as to whether Jane was a second wife (I think that is a very likely explanation)

But with names where there are lots of possible people around, it is easy to start following tbe wrong one. So I wouldstill recommend getting a birth cert for a child (of whichever marriage is of interest, or both) to find the mothers maiden name.

I disagree! ;D

Well within a day's walk! ;D
And easily traveled by horse, with or without cart!

People from a small town or village would often travel to a market town, such as Grantham.

Is that a 'contributed' or 'indexed' entry to Family Search?

sounds like indexed with the actual baptism date.

Could this be your lady from FreeBMD,

Mary Jane Sharp, birth registered Sept qtr 1848 Newark Vol 15 P 336 & then this marriage, Jane Sharp registered June qtr Newark 1873 7b 658, on the same page is John Parker. Newark is the reg district for Claypole, it looks to me like you have the same lady just using either of her names at will. :D

Hi

Familysearch has the following christening
Florence Parker christened 5/5/1889, Spittlegate, Lincoln, parents are John & Mary Jane Parker

Trouble is there are several Florence Parkers of similar age around.

"Our " one is always Florence Rose (just Rose on 1901)
Birth
Jul/Aug/Sep 1888
Grantham
ref 7a 468
Florence Rose Parker

So that baptism may well be her, but it also may not be!

e.g 1901 has a widowed John Parker with a 13 yr old daughter FLorence (RG13 3055 120 3) living in Albert Terrace, Spittlegate - so that baotism may be her?

In fact I am sure that baptism is the SPittlegate Parkers and not the Hards Yard ones - 'cos if you go back to 1891, the mother was indeed Mary J!

RG 12 2585 101 23  (Florence age 3, lots of siblings)

So that is at least one other John /Mary Jane couple in the area.
So, no way of knowing if that John/Mary Jane Sharp marriage is which couple.

Need a birth cert!

To confuse matters more there is a marriage registered in Peterborough Dec qtr 1872 3b 565 with a John Parker & a Mary Jane Laston on the same page. As the Spittlegate Parker's on the 1891 were born Northants & some of the children born Peterborough this does look like their marriage but then again maybe not. :-\ I do agree that a birth cert is the only way to be sure.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'll read through the information and go from there.

I can do a 1911 lookup myself, it's just a matter of making sure I have the right Parkers.

Thanks,
Nigel
