Title: Help with Long Island Hospital
Post by: mike13959 on Wednesday 28 May 14 17:03 BST (UK)

Having just recently found my gggrandmother after years of research, I came across a death entry for her on familysearch website. Can anyone help me with the following query?

Details are; Death 1896.  Cause of death - Amputation of the thigh-shock. Residence and place of death - Long Isl'd Hospital, 4 Prentiss St

What I hope to find out is; Would this hospital be connected to the Almshouse building that was there, or was there a separate building, and if so, any details of it.

Would there be a more General Hospital in the area that would carry out this amputation, or could she have possibly been an 'inmate' there? Her occupation on that entry lists her as, housework.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Regards, Mike

There is more than one Long Island.  Which state was this in?

The family were all residents of Massachusetts Shelly, and she was buried in Holyhood Cemetery.

Thanks, Mike

This seems to have a lot of detail about the history of the almshouse and hospital:  http://www.elderweb.com/book/appendix/1898-bostons-pauper-institutions
