Title: Northumberland birthplace
Post by: Isabel H on Wednesday 28 May 14 16:57 BST (UK)
This is the 1861 census for Hauxley, Northumberland (Ann Smeatham age 21).

What is her birthplace on the 4th line, please?

It looks like Ford:

I agree with Gadget. It looks like Ford and since her husband is from Rennington that would not be an unlikely match.

Thank you Craclyn and Gadget. I can see it now.

Your relatives and mine were probably gossiping together as they filled their water buckets at the standpipe Isabel. There is a Cracket family (not my direct line) further down the street from your Smeathams in 1861.

Robert was Baptised 27 Jan 1839, All Saints, Rennington to JOHN/ISABELLA
Abode Rennington, Fathers Occp Husbandman
(I am sure you have this)

1871 Census Ann SMEATON is born c 1840, Stainfield, Northumberland
(just posted as you may have this Census but the Trees I looked at dont)

Death Reg;
Ann SMETHAM, Sept 1878, Morpeth, 10b 225, age 38

I must say with all the people with Robert/Ann in their Trees I cannot believe no one has purchased a Childs Birth Cert to find her maiden name.

Trish :)

Thanks, Trish.

 It's mainly Robert I am interested in, as he went on to marry my 2xg aunt in Felton. Or at least I think he did! I'm confused now because the man I have been tracing has children called John & Isabella, which ties in nicely with the birth you found, but I had found what I thought was this Robert in 1851 in Hauxley. He's the right age, b. in Rennington, BUT his father is Thomas!

Back to the drawing board, methinks!

Isabel

I should add that Robert Smetham who married Sarah Shotton in Felton was b. 1839 in Rennington, and his obit.(1915) says he was well-known in the colliery villages of Amble and Broomhill.

I think it is possible that the 1841/1851 Census for Robert are the same person.
Maybe his Fathers name is put down incorrectly in 1851 as Thomas?

1851 Census I had to go back a few pages to see the address as Bailiff Terraces;
There we have ;
Thos Smetham, 47, Coal Miner, born Eng Northd, Holy Island
Robert, 12, Son, Scholar, born  Eng Northd, Rennington

1841 we have at Bailiff Terraces;
John SMITHAM, Horsekeeper
Isabella, 30
Charlotte, 14
Robt, 2

FreeBMD has the Death Reg of a Isabella Smitham, Dec 1845, Alnwick, 25 150

A JOHN Smeatham born c 1802, Holy Island, turns up again in the 1871 Census, married to a Rachel, step/daug is there also.

1861 he is under John Smeaton born 1806 Holy Island, Widower
Rachael Blyth is living next door

Marriage Familysearch.Org;
John SMEATON age 55 (1806), Father JOHN to Rachael BLYTH age 47 (1814), Father GEORGE

Have a look and see what you think.

EDIT;
If you look at that 1861 Census for Robert/Ann, on the same page is a JOHN Smeatham born c 1826 Rennington and Family. He has Children John/Isabella, although his Wife is a Isabella also.

Wow, thanks Trish, that all fits!  :)

"Thomas" does seem to be a mistake. On the image it is shown as "Thos.", so the enumerator may well have mis-read the original schedule.
