I am trying to find information on the birth of Matilda Holt who married William Stirrup in Blackburn in 1828. There is a record of her burial in 1846 at St Peter in Blackburn. This states her age as being 40. However, I can't find any Matilda Holts born within a couple of years of 1806.
I am assuming she had a sister Jane who married a Thomas Howarth as in the 1851 census Matilda and William's children were living with them (William having died in 1843 and Matilda in 1846). A Jane Holt married a Thomas Howarth in 1816 and her age in the 1851 census would have had her born in approximately 1797. The census has her birthplace as Manchester. I have found a Jane Holt who was born/baptised in 1795 in Manchester and whose parents were Jane and James. This Jane and James did have a Matilda born in 1798 however she died in 1800. They also appeared to have had a daughter Mary Ann born in Blackburn in 1809 - could her name possibly have been changed to Matilda?
If anyone can give me any pointers it would be much appreciated.

Matilda Stirrup buried 28th May 1846 ...the age 40 fits perfect with Matty Holt ?

Nanny Holt - Daughter of John Holt & Betty, his wife
Abode: Yorkshire St.
Occupation: Weaver
frankly , these were the only possibles I could find - like you ,I couldn`t find a baptism for Matilda Holt in the right timeframe ...so i wondered about "Matty " ?
probably wrong - but maybe worth looking in to ?

So...- that Matty Holt 1805 is no good ...she died ...
but
look at these 4 records ??

Born: 23 Feb 1810
Abode: Churchlane
Occupation: Weaver
then this record

fits with the above baptism - and note it says b Lancashire - not Blackburn where they live
then the daughter aged 0

presumably - with William and Matilda both having died - Thomas and Jane were responsible for the burial of Matilda aged 12 ...
is it possible that Matilda was only 35 when she died ??and someone made a mistake ?...

Thanks for the replies. I too thought of Matty possibly being Matilda. However, in regard to Nanny possibly being Jane it makes her a bit young to have married Thomas - she would only have been 13 in 1816 - and I am pretty sure she was born in Manchester (if the information put on the 1851 census is to be believed). Unfortunately the only census for Matilda is the 1841 one where they only had to say if they were born in "this county" and she has been marked yes as being born in Lancashire.
Do you think the Mary Ann I mentioned before could have become known as Matilda? This Holt family also had a Samuel who died and they named a later son Samuel (I have found a lot of recycling of names as I've researched my family!)
Otherwise, I think I have hit the proverbial brick wall with this one, and will start concentrating on trying to work out which of the two possible William Stirrups I can lay claim to.
