Does anyone have any information about Thomas's parents and children. I know that he married Margaret Peggy Orme on Jan 4 1774 and they had at least one child Margaret who arrived in Australia as a convict on the 23rd of June 1804.

Sometimes, if a child died, a second child was given the same name. Although I can't find a baptism for your Thomas, given that he named his first son George, if the above baptisms are correct, I wondered about this one:

mother: Rachel
perhaps it is a bit too late to be a brother of your Thomas.

There is a burial for a Margaret Southern wife of Thomas which could possibly be yours,
Buried 20 Aug 1817 All Saints Wigan, age 64 and died of fever
There's a baptism for a Margaret Orme 1753 Leigh Lancashire with father John.
Also a Thomas Southern buried 17 Jan 1850 All Saints Wigan aged 99 years.
You can find these records on the same website as the marriage and baptisms.
It's well worth a look,there is a wealth of information on it and you might find other records for the Southern family.

Thomas Southern (1751-1850) was son of William Southern (b. 27 March 1722 Leigh, Lancashire) and Mary Fairbrother (b. 12 January 1726 Bolton, Lancashire). William was son of Thomas Southern (b. ca. 1699). Margaret "Peggy" Orme, wife of Thomas (1751-1850) was b. 25 August 1753 Leigh, Lancashire, and d. August 1817 in Manchester. She was the daughter of John Orme and Mary Moss. John Orme was son of John Orme and Sybil Groome. Mary Moss was daughter of Marmaduke Moss and Jennett Stephenson.
