I am researching my Fry ancestors from Culmstock. I found a Thomas Fry who married a Jane Trickey 1824, with children who were christened in Prescot Baptist chapel. Does anyone know anything about Thomas Fry born abt 1799 or Jane Trickey also born 1799 as my search ends with them? I think that Thomas might have come from the Quaker religion.

From the 1851 census
HO/107/1921 Folio: 705
Blackdown, Culmstock Wellington
Thomas FRY Head Married 52 Farm Labourer Culmstock-Devon
Jane FRY Wife Married 52 Culmstock-Devon
William BROWNE Nephew 4 Culmstock-Devon
It was more unusual for Quakers in the C18th to come from farm labouring stock, because farm labourers were tied to the local landowners who usually insisted their workers worshipped in the local church.
However the Society of Friends kept excellent records. Earlier records are at the National Archives. Later ones with Devon record Office.
Society of Friends: Registers for 1784-87, 1837 (B) in PRO RG 6/1171;
1839-1846 (Z), 1765-94 (M), 1839-84 (B) at DRO
The Society of Friends made duplicates of all of its records before handing them over like other non-conformist churches to the governement in 1837. Friends House in London will have the registers and more research materials.
Even though the records are held at the National Archives unlike other non-conformist records the Mormons have largely not indexed Quaker records and they rarely if ever appear on the IGI to my knowledge.

Thank you Valda for your reply
I can’t find Thomas Fry on the Mormons IGI site that is why I think he could have been a Quaker but it would now make sense that the children were christened in Precsot chapel. If Thomas was a Quaker he may have had to come out of the faith because he would have had to find employment.
Kind regards

Just looked and found that I got Thomas's name and dates from the LDS site.

Can you connect your Thomas Fry to a John Fry that married a Sarah Townsend in Culmstock in 1754? If so I would be interested to hear from you as I am researching Townsends.
Have you had access to the Prescott chapel Births and Burials microfilm records from your LDS family history library? If you haven't and would like access to whatever Fry records I have found from there let me know.
I think you will find that it is birth records, not christenings. The Prescott Chapel was Baptist and performed adult baptisms not christenings. Warning....I know from experience they were often very tardy about recording births and deaths.

Hello
I would love to be able to stay yes or no, about connections with your John Fry but I cannot seem to find much on Thomas Fry. I know that his children were registered at Prescott Chapel, but nothing on Thomas’s or Jane Trickey whom he married. At Prescot Chapel. If I can find his birth details I would hopefully be able to identify his parents and so on. If you could look out for Thomas Fry born 1797-1799. I would be very much appreciated.
I have a booklet on Culmstock marriages 1754-1812, one entry in it reads FRY John Groom, Townsend Sarah Bride 24the August 1754.
Stay in touch

There was nothing at all for a Thomas birth in the Prescott Chapel records. All seemed to be as per the IGI. However I have made a note of Fry deaths as well which are not on IGI if you would like them.
It might be worth your while to still get out the Spiceland (Quaker) records. There is nothing to say that your Thomas wasn't born into a quaker family and then changed to the Prescott chapel as an adult. (Leaves no stone unturned) However be prepared that in all likelihood there won't be a birth record. There were times where the minister wrote in the register that it hadn't been kept, and basically he couldn't remember! Incidentally I have photos of this chapel taken earlier this year.
I have no doubt our ancestors rubbed shoulders in past history. My gg grandfather James had a brother John that also married a Trickey, and 2 of their children's births are registered at Prescott. Like you I am trying to pinpoint her family.

I have a generation of Frys all born Culmstock 1721 to 1730, the children of John Fry (c1696) and Joan Milton (c1701).
Joan was born Culmstck, but I have yet to trace John's place of birth. He would 'fit' into the Nicholas Fry and Mary Cook family of Honiton on Otter (one of whom is a Thomas - 1697), who later moved to Culmstock - but apart from his marriage in 1717 in Culmstock, I have no other clue.
The children of John Fry and Joan Milton were:
Unknown son 7-Jan-1721
George Fry 7-Mar-1724
Bettey Fry 18-Jun-1727
Jacob Fry 14-Jun-1728
William Fry 21-Mar-1730
John Fry 21-Mar-1730 (Could be the one married 1754?)
The dates are IGI and as far as I know christenings.
I only know the subsequent history of William, my ancestor, who moved on his marriage to Sarah Stone to Ottery St. Mary.
Basically I am interested in going back further with John Fry of ? - and which Joan Milton did he marry. There were two born in Culmstock -
1701 daughter of Richard Milton or
1702 daughter of Moses Milton (Culmstock) and Joane Wood.
Thanks

Yes Watermusic, the John Fry born 21st Mar 1730 could well be the one that married 1754. Unfortunately I don't think there is any way of knowing for sure. I haven't really done much on the Frys.

Hi
Have been doing a bit more research and have noticed that our families rub shoulders. Have you researched any of Sarah Trickey family. Sarah married John Townsend, the witness a John trickey who was also a witness to My jane Trickey, sister Elizabeth, maybe Sarah was also their sister.
hope this message gets to you

Hi
My more recent research leads me to the conclusion that the John Townsend that married Sarah Trickey is not in my direct line of Townsend. The John that is in my line, I believe did not marry, and is buried in Timberscombe Somerset where his younger brother Henry took up residence.

Hi There.. I'm not sure exactly how we are tied in but I am related to Fry's from Culmstock.. Robert Fry who married a Matilda and moved to Hackney. Also, there must be a link with the Fry's and my Manning family also from Culmstock.

How about parents John Fry b 1761 and Sarah Dinham b 1777 Culmstock? Or Thomas Winsborrow Fry b 1792 and Jane Trickey b 1799 parents George Fry and Mary Winsborrow?
Think there are quite a lot of related Frys in the area.
Good luck!

I am hoping that this forum might help. I’m a Fry, born in Canada, My father is John Fry, born in Canada, his father Earl born in Canada, his father John born in Culmstock in 1858 but died in Canada. His father was John b. 1818 (married Ann Milton) of Culmstock, with siblings Robert and Mary. Their father was John b. 1790, married Suzanna Gay. John’s father was Richard, but it ends there. Don’t know Richard’s lineage or wife. Any help appreciated – especially for my Dad – now 90.
